Get to know Ron Sellwood!

Though it can’t be confirmed 100%, rumours persist that Ron Sellwood is from Owen Sound, Ontario. Not Parry Sound. He wrote his first song a number of years back and instantly discarded it. But then, due to the miracle of practice, his song writing skills improved. To the point he’s now able to write songs in numerous keys. With lyrics to match. A unique talent if only in his own mind. Piano and two voices will be featured as Alice Sellwood completes the duo.

(Sellwood Performances over the years include - Tavern of Song, Free Times Cafe, Mariposa, El Mocambo, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Relish, Summerfolk plus many others)

Some of the songs we'll be hearing on November 2nd include; Not Quite Ready To Move On Yet, I Looked The Devil In The Eye, Barracudas On My Lawn, My Dog Looks Like Me, What Big Eyes You Have, Turn That Circle Upside Down, The Monster Mask

For those who don’t already know him, meet Bjorn! A performer at the very first Tavern of Song and a massive part of Veronique’s introduction to the music scene in Toronto, his familiarity with virtually all genres and facility with a frightening amount of instruments keep him a very busy musician.

"Bjorn Kriel is a Toronto based multi-instrumentalist. His reach in the city is wide, performing and recording consistently among different scenes, genres, and ensembles. This year he released his eclectic debut album 'The Eternal Drip' and continues to write and perform new music. Bjorn's swag is unusual and his musical stylings inimitable."

A jazz dancer of great renown stepping into the world of live music—meet Madelyn! A dear friend of Meredith and Veronique’s through the performing arts college where they all met, we cannot WAIT to hear what Maddy has been working on instrumentally.

“Madelyn Miyash*ta (she/her) is an actor, musician, dancer, and choreographer currently based in Toronto. She has performed with theatre and dance organizations around the city and across the country. As a musician, she plays the French horn, trumpet, and is slowly warming up to the idea of calling herself a bassist (she also received first class honours with distinction in grade 1 piano and quit while she was ahead). In her spare time, she enjoys arranging big band charts for her one man band recordings. In the past year, Madelyn has been learning more about lindy hop and Jazz, and she is excited to make her debut this fall.”

Playing the keys alongside Victoria for the first set of the night is Emmett Hodgins! He and Veronique went to the same high school in their hometown in BC, and reconnected after both graduating from their respective arts colleges and getting involved in Toronto’s performance scenes.

“Emmett Hodgins is a Victoria BC born Pianist proficient in classical, Jazz, folk and contemporary piano and music. After completing his RCM 10 and teaching at the VCM in Victoria, Emmett moved to Toronto to pursue bachelors in jazz performance at Humber college. Now graduated with Honors Emmett is regularly active in the Toronto and Victoria music scenes as a pianist, singer, bassist, and bandleader of his own groups the “Emmett Hodgins Trio’ and the ‘Emmett Hodgins Coast group” (a 7 piece modern jazz group playing strictly original music). Emmett is now residing in the West end of Toronto in his 7th year of teaching and performing.”

With the return of Tavern of Song just two weeks away, it’s time to start introducing all of our incredible performers! With Veronique being so heavily involved in Toronto’s dance scene, it made perfect sense for her to start the night off with a musician who’s working to reconnect the worlds of jazz and dance—meet Victoria Miller.

Victoria’s love for tap dance is fueled by music, dance, theatre, and authenticity, in which she actively pursues through her work as a professional dancer, choreographer, educator, and lifelong student. She loves to explore tap dance in the context of live music and jazz, sitting in with a band and improvising a tune. She teaches around Toronto and the GTA to students from ages 8-85, helping them reach their goals in exploring tap dance. You can find Victoria hosting “Tap Dance & Jazz Night” at Tallulah’s Cabaret, either taking her free tap class or taking part in the jam. Victoria extends her thanks to you for your support of the arts and tap dance!

ANNOUNCING TAVERN OF SONG #14!jpg presents Jazz-Adjacent 🎙️🎼🕯️

We’re back from our summer hiatus at a new venue with our very first guest host! Join us at the Monarch Tavern on September 30th for a night of music programmed by our dear friend and longtime collaborator Veronique—here’s a few lowercase words from our host for the evening:

“when i got to thinking about what kind of night i was aiming to program, i wanted it to be with friends of mine who i could ask in person to come play instead of sending them an email!! and of all my friends who are making music these days, i realized that a lot of them are very involved in the world of jazz, which i got to know myself rather well in my first few years of living in the city, so i ended up programming us a beautiful night of jazz and jazz-adjacent music
