Received in from Broadmead Care Victoria BC

July 31, 2026
Veterans at Broadmead Care
This month, Veterans Health Centre Day Program participant William (Bill) McIntyre is being feaetured through the Lookout Newspaper Veterans Corner series. Created in partnership with Broadmead Care, the series shares the stories of veterans who attend the Veterans Health Centre Day Program and those who call Veterans Memorial Lodge home.

Bill was just 19 years old when he left his family’s farm in Prince Edward Island to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He spent more than 30 years serving as a marine engineer, helping keep ships running safely during training, repairs, and deployments. His work took him around the world, and he took great pride in serving his country. Bill’s story is a reminder of the dedication and quiet service of the men and women who helped protect Canada, often behind the scenes.

Read Bill’s story by clicking the image above, or find it on page 8 in the full July 13, 2026 edition of the Lookout newspaper here.
Today, Bill attends the Veterans Health Centre Day Program at Veterans Memorial Lodge, where he enjoys sharing stories from his years of service. His life is a reminder that hard work, teamwork, and dedication can make a lasting difference.

On this day in 1953, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed, bringing an end to over three years of active fighting on the Korean Peninsula. Over 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War, and 516 Canadians lost their lives in service. Today, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served.

Do reach out to Kyle Scott off of Canadian Veterans: Owed or Missing Medals if your requiring assistance to get your medals for your family. It is never too late.

The reality is we will likely never find every case where a veteran is owed a medal, but we can try.

Even if they are long gone now, we can still apply on behalf of your loved one.

The amount of Canadians who served in our early years with NATO in France, Belgium, and Germany who have not received their medal is likely in the thousands.

If your loved one served six months in Europe between 1 January, 1951 and 19 October, 2004, they are likely entitled to the Special Service Medal with NATO bar.

I would love to help you and your family apply for this.

Kyle
