A Wicklow hillfort in the west of the county has been declared the largest, nucleated settlement in prehistoric Ireland and Britain by researchers at Queen’s University Belfast.

The findings, according to ­researchers, suggest early city development in northern Europe probably occurred nearly 500 years earlier than previously thought.

Local campaigners, who successfully campaigned against a windfarm being developed in the area, have this week described the site as “a national treasure”.
