Plant 2026 is in the books!

May 6-25th. Started as early as we could with small snowbanks still around the bushlines. The first week had us put in wheat and barley. This was followed by rain that moved into full-on blizzard conditions and snow sticking around for days around May long weekend.

Back at it on Monday the 17th with a new plan to get a second 84' Seedhawk rolling. By May 18th going hard on canola with both drills. This was awesome but stretched all the manpower thin, running the drills and keeping them full of seed, fertilizer and fuel. There was (and still is) water in places I've never seen water so it was tough going thru the nights.

We have great emergence across the board on cereals and even the first canola is up in only one week. It is growing crazy hard with these high temps now.

Thankful for a good start and good luck to everyone still rolling in tougher conditions!

Time for a beer like the one in the last photo. This Prairie Pilsner from is a beauty. After chilling this one (appropriately for 2026 in a snowbank), I was able to drink this one on the field where we planted our new crop barley.

Throwback video to a couple years back. Have no time to make one of those this year!

Seeding Days 13-16. We're about 1 week past our "perfect" day to plant the crop in our area so we are going hard. We picked up and set up another 84' Seedhawk on Monday and got that in the field by Tuesday. Wheat is done and both drills are rolling on the canola. Crew is busy as we're stretched out on keeping both seeders running, seed and fertilizer and fuel to them, spraying and even hauling some lentils. Typically we like to have two guys able to drive each seeder on a early and late shift, but I got this one on my own so not a lot of sleep, should be the heaviest week of work in our farming year.

Seeding Day 5-8. Long days and quite a few small frustrating issues. However, barely is done and back to wheat.

Mother's Day supper and also big 5th birthday for Henrik broke up the work. For the second year in a row all Henrik wanted to do was get pulled out of pre-k early and come seeding. Good times

Day 3 of
Passed 1000 acre of wheat in the ground

No school this Friday so all 3 kids got a couple of hours in the tractor. Even had the luxury of going one at a time which was amazingly uneventful in comparison to the full crew!

Beautiful skies, sighted moose, deer, coyotes and lots of migrating birds. Pretty nice spring seeding day.

Got rolling on yesterday. This is about 1 week later than our 5-year average start date. Over the last 15 years it would be maybe 3-4 days later than average.

Despite feeling like easing into it and working out the kinks, the statistical best day to seed in our area is less than a week away so we will push pretty good from the get-go
