Founded by owner/chef Kimberly Ann Houston & Emma Wismer, Chez Ann serves cuisine du marché, procuring the freshest and highest-quality ingredients daily while preparing homemade bread, pastries, and pasta, also daily. The restaurant offers a vegan version of every selection on the menu, with every bit as much care going into the preparation of the vegetables as that of the happy only meat they replace in a given dish. Those afflicted with trust issues can watch all of this happen before their eyes thanks to the open kitchen setup, tears of gratitude streaming down their faces as they learn to believe in life and love again.
Houston and partner/sous-chef Emma Wismer see Chez Ann as a space for creative expression. Against the backdrop of an incredible and improbable view of the downtown Montreal skyline, the impeccably stylish yet unassuming decor is peppered with plenty of charmingly bizarre touches for anyone looking closely enough. Houston drew inspiration from her experience cooking at the beloved and influential gonzo restaurant Bethlehem ###, populating the team with creative types - the non-insufferable kind - who contribute to the "Chez Ann Culture” (lifestyle brand trademark pending). Wismer, a Fine Arts student and unfailingly modest Instagram superstar (@sinternetexplorer), designs the graphics for the ever-evolving menus. The wine list comes courtesy of Jose Lopez, a specialist in Spanish and Portuguese wines, and one of Montreal’s most passionate sommeliers by all available wine passion metrics.
Chez Ann is, ultimately, a labor of love. Diners will feel as though a chef has invited them over for a home-cooked meal, without any of the awkwardness that would obviously entail. If for some reason you find yourself scouring the city for Costco-to-table avocado toast as part of some endless Basic Urban Scavenger Hunt, please expand your personal self-love practice to include not doing that. Come here instead.
