The name of our bi-monthly company newsletter derives from nautical terminology and custom. A mainbrace is the line with pulley used to hoist the mainsail of the sort of wooden sailing ship traditional to Atlantic Canadian waters. The term "splicing the mainbrace" refers to the Royal Navy custom of rewarding a ship's crew for a job particularly well done by serving everyone an extra tot of rum. To do this, the Captain gave the order, "Splice the Mainbrace!" As a beverage alcohol agency in Atlantic Canada which is committed to doing the job particularly well for our clients around the world, what could be more natural than to associate ourselves with the notion of Splicing the Mainbrace?

Finally had a chance to visit with last week and what a treat! Seeing the vineyards and tasting the lineup of w**es all together adds a lot of context to what she has accomplished the last 20 years (!!!) in Vittoria, Sicily. Amazing w**es that are so alive in the glass that they explode on your palate. Nerello just moved up the ladder of my favourite grapes! Barolo Chinato (key-nah-tow) is an ancient Piedmontese digestif made using Barolo Albe DOCG as a base, then infusing it with around 30 herbs, rinds and roots of plants.
It is a flavoured w**e, not a fortified w**e like Port. This means that most of the alcohol content (18%) and sweetness are due to the herbal and spice infusions in alcohol together with the sugar added to the Barolo. It is deep in colour, with lovely aromatics, and a complex palate.
Chinato is an ideal winter sipper, so get out the dark chocolate, enjoy it on its own, as a digestif, or make a Chinato Spritz with some soda (and Cava if you like).
The bottle will last up to 2 months once open if refrigerated. Available at The Port by while supplies last.
