Round 2 with Mayor Andy Fillmore:

Halifax is growing fast. The real question is whether we’re ready for it.
This week on Afternoon Pint, we sit down with Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore for a long-form conversation about what comes next for HRM.
We talk housing, transit, infrastructure, Halifax Water, defence investment, and why the biggest risk to the city’s future might be something simple: saying no to the growth that is already coming.
This isn’t a blame session. It’s a “brutal facts” conversation.
Halifax needs more homes.
Better mobility.
Faster approvals.
Smarter infrastructure planning.
And a city hall that can move at the speed of the moment.
Because if we get this right, Halifax can become one of the most exciting cities in Canada.
If we get it wrong, opportunity turns into higher costs, traffic, frustration, and people being priced out of the place they love.

Episode 156: Dr Jeanette Boudreau

🧬 Cancer research can feel like a distant world of microscopes and jargon, but the stakes are painfully everyday: can we help people live longer, feel better, and suffer less during treatment?

This week, we’re joined by Jeanette Boudreau from Dalhousie University to break down what’s changing right now in cancer immunotherapy, especially in blood cancers, and why “hope” is starting to look a lot more like hard evidence. 🩸🔬

We talk about:
✨ The hidden costs of cancer care in Canada
✨ Why quality of life matters just as much as survival
✨ How patient partners are reshaping research priorities
✨ Why cancer is so difficult for the immune system to detect
✨ How CAR T-cell therapy can reprogram immune cells to hunt cancer for years 🧫⚔️
✨ The future of AI, precision medicine, and tumour “avatars” 🤖
✨ Why diverse blood donation matters for better research and transplant matches ❤️

This conversation takes complex science human and explores how the future of cancer treatment could become more personalized, accessible, and effective here in Canada 🇨🇦

Episode on immigration

Two employed graduate international students and their dreams of becoming permanent Canadian residents being erased overnight.

We sat down with two young men who came to Nova Scotia as international students, graduated, entered the workforce, paid taxes, and built their lives here.

They are not asking for special treatment. They are asking whether a fair system should account for people who came here legally, worked hard, stayed employed, and chose Nova Scotia as home.

There is a labour story here. There is an education story here. There is a policy story here. But mostly, there is a human story.

One of the clearest lines from the conversation:

“We have two guys here that are fighting to be Nova Scotians.”

If you work in business, education, government, immigration, HR, or community leadership in Nova Scotia, I hope you’ll listen.

And if it moves you, share it with someone who can help.

There’s something powerful about creating where you live 🎬

No waiting for permission. No chasing approval from bigger cities. Just passion, friends, and the drive to bring something real to life.

Sitting down with local creators reminded us: you don’t have to leave home to build something meaningful. You just have to start.

As Canadians, we talk a lot about resources and economy but what about our stories? Our voices? Our creativity? 🇨🇦

Maybe it’s time we invest in that too. 🎥✨
