Quality Check: Brewing It Right

Great beer isn’t just brewed—it’s carefully monitored. During fermentation, brewers track how much sugar has been converted into alcohol by measuring gravity. As yeast works its magic, sugar levels drop and alcohol rises, giving brewers a clear picture of progress.

They also keep a close eye on pH levels, which affect flavor, stability, and overall balance. Too high or too low, and the final brew can taste off.

It’s all about precision—because every great pint starts with great control.

People Make Gladstone - Meet Andrew!

From opening night to now, Andrew has been part of the Gladstone story since day one. On January 14, 2015, he raised a pint of IPA to celebrate the brewery’s very first night—captured in a post about taking his son along for the experience, a moment that still feels special today.

When it comes to favourites, the core IPA still takes the top spot, with the Red, and Hazy Pale Ale following close behind.

Outside the brewery, Andrew is rarely still. He says there isn’t a road in the Comox Valley he hasn’t ridden, cycling here, there, and everywhere while raising money for cancer care and research. He’s deeply grateful for Gladstone’s incredible support of Team Charlie. You’ll also find him singing with the Just in Time choir, kayaking or sailing with his wife, skiing Mount Washington, and teaching—something he’s done in this community for 30 years, shaping generations of local students.

A longtime Courtenay local, Andrew’s roots run deep, and we’re proud he’s been riding alongside Gladstone since the very beginning.
