As we approach our 10th Anniversary of ranching in the desert, I am taking a moment to reflect on the past 9. The dry years taught us a lot about the environment in Saskatchewan that easier years would not have. We have learned to be incredible grass managers. Overgrazing of forages (especially native species) can have extreme adverse effects. Also, when the dry weather hits, grass runs out FAST! While this video of 3.5 bales/acre may not be a bumper crop to all, to us, it's the first year where we haven't had to ask ourselves if it's even worth keeping cows around.
Thank you to Jon & Michael Verstegen for knocking our crop down and baling it. To Michael McLeod and Kelcy Elford of Caroncrest Farms for helping us get some baling done before the rain. To Shane and Natalie Fradette for use of the rake and a future thank you to Paul DuSomme and David Hasson who are going to help haul this bumper crop into the yard!
The biggest thank you of all goes to the higher power that sent an abundance of rain to our area this year. We are beyond blessed and this wonderful year has placed a permanent memory stamp on our grateful hearts.
