We appear to have reached the stage of this ten-day music marathon where things are getting a little undignified. Excellent!
‌
SATURDAY, and we’re still going strong 😎
‌
First up, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗰𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 at NOON, bringing their wonderful old-time country, bluegrass and harmonies to Nyanza.
‌
Then at 2:30 PM, 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 take over the BREW FLOOR! Yep, we're doing it again: music among the brewing tanks! Banjo, mandolin, big harmonies, and plenty of reasons to get up off your backside.
‌
Outside, the hills are putting on an absolutely ridiculous display of autumn colour. Inside, we’re doing our best to compete.
‌
Cold b**r, Rose’s smash burgers & doughnuts, FREE live music, and one more glorious day still to come tomorrow.
‌
Bring the kids. Bring the dogs. Bring your dancing feet!

Friday, and absolutely nobody is taking their foot off the gas!
‌
We’re rolling into the last three days of music with fresh energy, full fall colour, and a brand new b**r release to match. 🍂🍻
‌
𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵 kicks things off at noon, and after yesterday’s raging success, all 2:30pm shows are moving to the big brewery brew floor ~ louder, livelier, and considerably more industrial 🕺🏻
‌
Today also marks the release of 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗧𝗼 𝗕𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱, brewed with Rachel Davis McMullen & Darren McMullen, and named after the tune from their award-winning album HOME. They’ll be joined at 2:30pm by special guest Thierry Clouette from Québec, who also appears with them in their trio material ~ so yes, this one’s going to be extra special.
‌
Add in Rose’s penultimate weekend of smash burgers & doughnuts, plus kids and pups very much welcome, and you’ve got yourself a proper Cape Breton fall day.
‌
Come hungry, come thirsty, come ready.
We are not losing steam around here!

Apparently the wind has decided our music tent would look better somewhere in the middle of the Bras d’Or Lake.

Yes, the actual brewery. Among the tanks, pallets, and general machinery of b**r-making.

The wind can have the tent. We’re keeping the band.

We brewed a Czech Pilsner called 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗥𝗢𝗟𝗟, then booked 20 live sets in ten days.

We’re very good at giving advice we have no intention of taking 🐌

Thanksgiving weekend was a beauty, Cape Breton! And we’re nowhere 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳 finished.

Two live sets EVERY DAY through Sunday. Noon and 2:30. Yes, even on a Tuesday. Who decided weekends should have all the fun?

The long-awaited champion has entered the building:

𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗔 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 ~ the winning b**r from our 14th annual Big Spruce Home Brew Challenge ~ releases this week.
‌
This year’s challenge was 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗙𝗧 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡, which sent our home brewers digging into the excellent, deeply unfashionable corners of b**r history. The winner? A California-style Steam B**r: toasty and lightly caramel-malty, rustic and hoppy, properly bitter, crisp as hell and built for drinking rather than discussing for 45 minutes.
‌
A working-class b**r born in Gold Rush California, revived at the dawn of the craft b**r revolution… and now, naturally, brewed in Nyanza and named after Halifax.
‌

We have once again looked at a perfectly reasonable October calendar and decided it needed 20 live shows 👀
‌
From 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟵–𝟭𝟴, we’re settling in for ten straight days of music at the brewery, with two free shows every day ~ 𝟭𝟮 𝗣𝗠 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮:𝟯𝟬 𝗣𝗠 ~ and an absolutely terrific collection of Cape Breton musicians, old friends, new faces, trad, swing, songwriters, ramblers and assorted excellent troublemakers.
‌
This stretch of October is one of our favourite times of the year at the brewery. The leaves are showing off, Celtic Colours is in full flight, the tent is up, the b**r is pouring, and there is really no sensible reason to be anywhere else.
‌
10 days. 20 free shows. No tickets required.
Just come to Nyanza, find yourself a seat, order a pint, and stay awhile.

We know that the words “community gathering about nature” can very quickly conjure up visions of folding chairs, PowerPoints and somebody explaining composting for 45 minutes.

That is not what we’re going for here.
‌
On 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟭, we’re hosting Nature Nova Scotia’s PUT NATURE FIRST ~ Cape Breton Gathering at Big Spruce.
‌
First: Lucy MacNeil & Rob Durando, live from 𝟮:𝟯𝟬–𝟰:𝟯𝟬 𝗽𝗺.
‌
Then, from 𝟰:𝟯𝟬–𝟲:𝟬𝟬, we’ll turn things over to a conversation with 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝗕𝗼𝗯 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗳𝘁, Nature Nova Scotia and people from around Cape Breton.
‌
The premise is uncomplicated. We live in a spectacular part of the world. People care about it. There are plenty of smart people doing interesting work here already. So let’s put some of them in the same place, hear what they’re seeing, ask questions, swap ideas and talk about what looking after Cape Breton can actually mean in ordinary life.
‌
No grand declarations required. No expectation that everyone in the room agrees about everything.
‌
Just a good afternoon, some excellent music, a pint if you want one, and a conversation worth having.
