โผ๏ธ REVIEW EXTORTION โ A WARNING TO FELLOW RESTAURANTS ๐จ
I recently saw a post from a restaurant in San Pedro about a group of tourists who allegedly threatened to leave negative reviews across multiple platforms if they did not receive what they were demanding. These individuals claimed to be social media influencers, and said they can damage the business reputation. At the time, I never imagined that we would experience something similar here in Belize City.
Unfortunately, tonight, four American tourists visited our establishment. After ordering food and drinks, they demanded that we honor a promotion for which they did not qualify.
When we explained that the promotion could not be applied to their situation, then then conceded that they did not, however 4 out of the 5 ladies then became extremely confrontational and told us that unless we then gave them four complimentary drinks to take with them, they would leave negative reviews on Google and TripAdvisor. The 5th female left from around them because she said with her own mouth that she did not want to be apart of the extortion, laughed and walked away.
I was honestly shocked and in disbelief by the situation. Their behavior was extremely pushy, confrontational, and disrespectful toward our staff.
We are sharing this not to create unnecessary drama, but simply as a warning to other restaurants and businesses that may encounter the same individuals. Please be aware and make sure your staff know that no customer should be able to pressure or threaten a business into providing free products or services through the threat of negative reviews.
This is not something we normally post about. We take pride in treating every customer with respect and providing a great experience, and we expect the same courtesy in return.
Hopefully, sharing this can help other businesses recognize this type of behavior and handle it appropriately.
