My name is Cindy Godet. I'm 37 years old, from the beautiful country of The Bahamas and I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse that began at the hands of my father, from the time I was 7 until I was 15.
At the age of 13, I was also sexually abused by a cousin and a minister. Needless to say, my view of myself and the world around me was grossly distorted. At the age of 15, I attempted su***de and spent time in a psychiatric ward. I battled and overcame alcoholism and Bulimia that I struggled with in my 20s, for several years. In my 30s, as I began to publicly speak out and name my abusers, I lost a lot of people I loved, primarily my family. To this day I have a relationship with less than 5% of my family, but it is a lovely and amazing less than 5%! 😊Some of you may ask why I'm not highlighting more of my victories. I want those who will read this to understand that the effects of sexual trauma are very real and long lasting. And it's imperative that you TELL SOMEBODY and get help!
Healing begins when someone bears witness to the silence you're breaking. It's certainly not easy to do, but I take comfort in knowing I'm not alone. I hope you all do as well. I'm now in CBT & Psychotherapy for an Anxiety Disorder as well as Complex PTSD. I used to be ashamed to say that, but now I embrace who I am fully, challenges and all. I'm beautiful when I'm high, and I'm beautiful when I'm low. I salute all of you, my fellow survivors for doing what many try to stop us from doing.... speaking! Keep speaking! The only power abusers have, is the silence of their victims. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be among fellow survivors from every walk of life, who are not ashamed to tell their truths. Keep using those voices, you powerful warriors, and let's keep encouraging other survivors to TELL SOMEBODY!!
