Two remarkable Moai Tangata Manu (Birdman) carvings from our collection.

Carved along the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea, this Tambanum war canoe prow is far more than decoration. The mask-like face represents an ancestral spirit — a guardian meant to protect the canoe and its crew during warfare, trade journeys, and ceremonial expeditions.

The colors carry deep symbolic meaning: red for blood, vitality, and strength; white for ancestral spirits and ritual purity; black for mystery, power, and the unseen world. Even the raffled fiber ropes are significant, adding movement and spiritual energy to the figure as the canoe moved through the river.

A powerful example of how art, spirituality, and identity were inseparable in Sepik River culture.
