Welcome to the Barbados Polo Club
The Barbados Polo Club, which can trace its roots back more than 130 years, has been based at Holders Hill in the parish of St James since 1965. Affiliated to the world-rekonwned Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), based in England, the Club is the governing body of the sport in Barbados. The picturesque Holders Polo Field, overlooking the West Coast in the shadow of Holders House, was for many years the only home to the sport in the island, but additional fields have been developed over the past decade or so, allowing Barbados to develop as the Caribbean’s centre of polo excellence. Each of these clubs and fields are represented on the Barbados Polo Club’s key committees, which deal with the annual fixture list – a busy calendar runs between December and early May, encompassing the island’s major tourist season – and the nitty-gritty of player handicaps. All visitors are welcome to matches across the island, which are scheduled a few times a week during the season, with local matches often staged as “warm-ups” for the growing number of International Tournaments. It is important to remember that polo is heavily dependent on good weather, not only at the stated time of a match, but in the preceeding few hours, so it is worth checking before heading off. As social media becomes increasingly widely-used, this information is ever-more readily available.
