🇦🇺 AFGHANISTAN 25 | 2001–2026

Today, the Yeppoon RSL Sub-Branch held a commemorative service at the James Street Cenotaph to mark 25 years since Australian Defence Force personnel first deployed to Afghanistan.

It was wonderful to see so many people from our community come together to honour the courage, commitment and sacrifice of those who served.

We remember the 47 Australians who lost their lives as a result of their service, those who were wounded and the families who stood beside them.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and helped make today’s service a meaningful occasion of remembrance.

To all who served, we thank you.
To those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we will never forget.

🇦🇺 Lest We Forget. 🌺

AFGHANISTAN25 | 2001–2026
This year marks 25 years since Australian Defence Force personnel first deployed to Afghanistan.

In response to the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001, Australia commenced military operations in Afghanistan, contributing to a multinational mission that would span two decades.

Between 2001 and 2021 more than 35,000 Australian Defence Force personnel served in Afghanistan and the broader Middle East Area of Operations in relation to Afghanistan.
The Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour records 47 Australians who lost their lives as a result of their service, with some 263 wounded.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of Australia’s first deployment, we recognise and honour the courage, commitment and sacrifice of the Navy, Army and Air Force personnel who served in Afghanistan.

The Yeppoon RSL Sub-Branch invites veterans, families and members of our community to join us as we come together to remember and recognise their service.

SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER 2026
📍 James Street Cenotaph, Yeppoon
🕥 Service commences at 10:30am.

Following the service, everyone is warmly invited back to the Yeppoon RSL Sub-Branch.
To all who served, and to the families who stood beside them, we thank you and we remember.

Lest We Forget.

Brisbane paused to honour 125 years of naval service as HMAS Moreton delivered a Beat to Quarters and Ceremonial Sunset in King George Square. ⚓

With City Hall glowing blue, the ceremony paid tribute to the sailors who have served our nation and those continuing to serve today.
