Last week was certainly a busy one here at the Riverine Club. Our builders worked hard battling wild weather, but our new roof is almost complete! We can't wait to see the end result.

Meet Bernard Whyte! Bernard is a long-standing member of the Club and has been a member of the Board for 10 years - and Vice-President for 4 years. With a background in corporate agricultural management, he has also spent time running the Rural Futures desk with Sydney-based stockbrokers. After a long period operating a mixed farming enterprise at Junee Reefs, he and his wife Diana now run a smaller property near Oura. He is recognised (by his family) as an absolute AFL tragic, and also loves rugby union, although he is less keen on his grandsons wanting him to practice tackling with them.

Bernard is passionate about the Riverine Club – and is a regular at most of the functions held there. Having established the inaugural Country Lunch with Ian Horsley and Simon Playfair, he now ensures that this well-attended event is a regular feature for the Spring calendar at the Club. He takes a great interest in the wine and food offerings at the Club, and was also instrumental in getting a Strategic Plan underway to guide the Board’s activities. Bernard wants the Club to be established as ‘the place to be’ when out and about in Wagga Wagga!

Anzac Day is a meaningful time for us to reflect on the long-standing relationship between the Riverine Club and the Australian Defence Force (ADF), dating back to World War II.

Located in Wagga Wagga, Australia’s only tri-service city, the Club has proudly supported RAAF, Army, and Navy personnel for decades, serving as a social and hospitality hub and offering honorary membership to serving officers. During WWII, the Club played a vital role in the war effort, providing dining and social facilities for Australian and American air force officers while training operations were coordinated across the Riverina.

Today, that connection remains strong. The Club continues to welcome Defence members, host joint events, and strengthen ties with the local military community. This week’s Anzac Day dinner, featuring an address from the Kapooka Commandant, is a fitting tribute to that enduring partnership.
