Beer is under appreciated in our society. When people think of beer they think of a basic carbonated alcoholic beverage, some taste nice whilst others don’t – but why? What isn’t understood is that beer is an incredibly complex combination of ingredients with as many, if not more, different varieties and styles than wine and coffee. The Beer Appreciation Society aims to expose its members to beers
that they would never have otherwise tried, breweries that they may never have heard of otherwise and knowledge to understand why they enjoy what they are drinking. Our aim is not to encourage binge drinking, but to foster the enjoyment of an ancient beverage enjoyed by the Belgian Trappist monks, Ancient Egyptian Royalty and every culture in between. Perhaps one of the most interesting beverages, to be considered beer it must contain all of these four ingredients: a grain, yeast, hops and finally water. The reason different areas specialise in different beers is due to the mineral composition of the water supply in each area and how it effected the end product. Throughout the year, the Beer Appreciation society hopes to expose its members to professional beer judges, head brewers of major craft breweries and the processes in which the beer they drink is created. By conducting regular, themed gatherings our members will be given the opportunities to expand their knowledge and discover a new favourite beer in the process. From IPAs to Saisons, wheat beers to porters and everything in between, this society aims to explore it all. Globally, beer is the third most consumed beverage after water and tea so it only makes sense that it is explored and given the appreciation and understanding it deserves. The Beer Society respects all grain fermented beverages however, mass produced, commercial beers will be avoided and discouraged as they are not a true representation of the wonders of beer.
