We had a cool time in Seoul, and managed to fit a few b**rs in. I got crook for a couple of days, so less b**r venues than we had hoped. We managed to hit up:

Coolship is recommended for high end lambics and US imports. Seoul Brewery was terrific for its vibe and local b**rs, and ArtMonster for solid b**rs and a cracking people watching view of Hongdae.

A b**r festival in Seoul today - 2-8.30pm. Fun just hanging around drinking the local breweries, and occasionally adding an imported US B**r. We met an Irish couple (Ricky and Amy), Sylvia from Germany, and Wazza from Strathfield.

Hong Kong you were fun. Plenty of b**rs were had and some awesome b**r people were met.

B**r time went something like this, with our recommended bars being: Tap : The Ale Project, Madhouse, Craftissimo and The Globe. The best local brewery for us was Hong Kong B**r Co.

Weekend b**rs at Tony's Taphouse 😀

A delayed wrap up of a Tony's Taphouse b**r night on Fri 28 Aug.

A blind tasting (7x attendees) of 6x barley w**es was the main event, with the b**rs presented as follows:
- at 12.5C (55F) degrees
- unidentified on each paddle,
- with all 6x b**r bottles randomly available for viewing, and
- with each person seeking to identify each b**r and rate it individually.

The twist was that 5x b**rs were A Deal with the Devil (ADWTD) variants (1x single oaked, 1x double oaked, 2x triple oaked, 1x quadruple oaked) and the other was a Horus led collaboration with Anchorage seeking to imitate/replicate ADWTD. The question posed was: 'does time and/or number of barrels make a difference to appreciation of the b**r'.

Each person gave each b**r an Untappd score and also ranked the b**r on their paddle (1 is best, 6 is worst). The lowest total of ranking points determined the winner. There were minor differences between final ranking on paddle versus final ranking by Untappd score - but ranking on paddle was used to decide final placement.

The results were as follows:
1. Horus Fletcher One 2025 (aged 60 months) 4.77
2. ADWTD TO B15 2024 (aged 26 months) 4.80
3. ADWTD QO B3 2023 (aged 28 months) 4.68
4. ADWTD DO B9 (can) 2025 (aged 21 months) 4.63
5. ADWTD TO B8 2024 (aged 26 months) 4.58
6. ADWTD SO 2026 (aged 17 months) 4.52

Based upon these blind results, there was no absolute relationship between time in barrel or number of barrels exposed to, however the highest rated b**r was in barrel by far the longest time (60 months), and the lowest rated b**r in barrel by far the shortest time (17 months), with both b**rs only exposed to a single barrel. As such, for this tasting, there is an argument to say that time in barrel, rather than quantity of barrels exposed to, is the determining factor in drinker appreciation.

This was fun to do and I thank my friends who were involved for humouring me in my b**r nerdery 😀

We were privileged to be a part of a wonderful visit to Kereru Brewing in the Upper Hutt over the weekend. 25 Aussies, all visiting NZ for B**rVana, were treated to a private tour and b**r tasting on Sunday (when they don't usually open).

Chris and Natasha (who own and operate Kereru), were incredibly generous with their time, energy, and knowledge. They led us through a 12-b**r tasting, explaining each b**r fully as we went. In addition they put on a yummyl lunch which was fully comprised of locally sourced and grown ingredients. I've always been a big fan of Kereru's barrel aged dark b**rs and nothing has changed!!

In difficult times for many in the b**r industry, it is humbling that these guys put themselves out so much to make our day. Much thanks.

4 days sampling Auckland's b**r was fun. We got to the following 10x b**r places:
- Brewers Co-operative
- 16 Tun
- Good George
- Lumsdon Freehouse
- Galbraith's
- Garage Project
- The B**r Spot
- Urbanaut
- Saint Leonards
- Brothers

Auckland is b**r venue rich - there is nothing to compare in Sydney for pure craft b**r places open on a Mon-Wed.

On to Wellington now for B**rVana.

A few Perth breweries today - not a stack of b**rs at each - only a paddle each at Phat and Blasta. A few actual glasses at Seasonal - which was my favourite.

All these breweries are absolutely worth a visit - they are all making decent b**r across a range of styles. They are all focusing on b**r less than 6.5% (😞), with the exception of the barley w**e (hello) at Seasonal.

Great to have places to go to on a Monday - there aren't too many places in other parts of Australia where this is possible... so well done Perth!

A mixed week in Tony's Taphouse. A few b**rs arrived, but sadly a reasonably expensive ($205) b**r was infected - Dimensional (Iowa USA) 2026 BA S'meeres. I was aware that it had a high chance of being infected, as about 50% appear to have been. Luckily I could only source 1x!! This doesn't happen often, but it is one of the risks of secondary b**r buying overseas. Such is life.

The Assassins that arrived will be bloody awesome though 😀

Tony's Taphouse hosted a New FY b**r night on Friday 3 Jul. Photos attached - 63 b**rs hopefully enjoyed.

Congratulations to Rob and Richard on taking out the French Pressing (using Stockade Ancient Money 2023 as the base b**r), after Thomas was penalised for voting for his own b**r - thanks also to Thomas for self-reporting. 😀

Rob and Richard went for a coconut heavy approach, banking on the fact that most people enjoy it. Additionally they added cinnamon, licorice and maple syrup to the mix for complexity. Congratulations also to Brad and Caitlin, who managed to make their b**r worse than the b**r they started with - fine effort that!

We had a few folk along who are not craft b**r veterans, so we each shared and scored a b**r familiarisation paddle to start. Adjuncted stout was #1, non-adjuncted stout #2, and IIPA #3.
