THE LINK REPORT
20 May 2026
Controversy in the valley this week with a proposal announced by Woronora Chamber of Commerce, Business and Tourist Board to introduce parking fees for Prince Edward Park and Woronora RSL Club, in line with Randwick Council’s plan to introduce fees at a number of it’s beaches.
Board Chairperson Gordon Gekko told a packed press conference that the proposal is totally warranted and forms part of the broader 2030 Woronora Revitalisation and Premium Access Strategy.
“Every weekend we’re seeing carloads of day-trippers crossing the bridge like it’s bloody Noosa”, said a fired up Gekko. “Woronora is one of the last untapped premium waterfront parking markets in the southern hemisphere.”
"Plus most days you can't find a park west of the Forbes Creek bridge due to the smashed avacado and caramel soy latte crowd", Gekko added.
Motorists will be charged ten dollars an hour for the privilege of leaving their car within a 200 metre radius of anything that could be described as “a point of interest”. This includes the boat ramp, the park, the RSL Club, the footbridge, and the Wonnie bottle shop.
Woronora RSL Club Media and Communications Manager Murray Link told the press conference that the club was working to create a validation scheme to minimise the impact on club patrons.
“We’re proposing a system where schooner purchases will offset parking fees,” Link explained. “At Randwick rates, you’d need to drink about seven beers an hour to break even. While that’s more than achievable for most of our members, we can’t officially encourage it.”
Local resident and longtime bar stool support Barney Gumble said the new fees would be an inconvenience and would force him to rethink his routine.
“I’m thinking I’ll have to start walking to the club now”, a despondent Gumble opined. “I haven’t walked 70 metres since high school, but when money is at stake…”
One resident confirmed that he has applied to have his front yard rezoned as a ‘boutique parking experience’ and is planning to offer a flat fee of $20 dollars for 4 hours, or $50 per day.
Whilst some residents have expressed concern that the new fees would discourage visitors to Woronora, others are welcoming the change.
“This is fantastic and long overdue”, said longtime resident Elsie Guzzlegutz. “Maybe now I’ll actually get a parking spot at the RSL Club when I go up for the prawn raffle on a Friday.”
Woronora Chamber of Commerce, Business and Tourist Board will be holding an information session at Woronora RSL Club tomorrow night as part of Thirsty Thursday celebrations. Those planning to attend are advised parking will remain free for the first 15 minutes with any purchase from the bistro.
