Dearest friends, family and supporters,

It is with the heaviest of heart that we share the news that our doors will not be reopening. The second lockdown really hit us hard and we have been unable to find a way to continue. Even with a reduction in rent during the lockdown period, it is so difficult to continue in such uncertain times and very little funding support. We simply cannot survive through this ongoing pandemic. We fought as hard as we could for almost 8 years and we are so proud that we even made it as far as we did and of what GD became. This decision was not an easy one to make and we can assure you, we have thought it through.

We thank all of the incredible staff at Giant Dwarf for their tireless work and just downright amazing personalities. GD would never have existed in the way that it did without you. We love you all very much.

Thank you to all of the amazing producers and artists we’ve worked with. We really appreciate that you chose us to show your work. Without you, we wouldn’t have had a stage in the first place.

Thank you to the City of Sydney for all of the support throughout the years. That support helped us to expand our program and explore new ideas. Thanks also to the Thyne Reid Foundation for supporting our efforts to keep the theatre going at the new venue, and to everyone who gave individually to the theatre by one-off donation or as regular supporters.

To Neil and JC, thank you for funding the Giant Developments program which allowed us to discover new talent and develop something really important - funding and a stage for artists.

And lastly but not least by any means - thank you to our biggest supporters, our audience members. Your ongoing support throughout the years and all of your lovely energy kept us going. By showing up to our shows, you built a community that truly influenced us all at GD in a beautiful way. We are forever grateful for the experience and will always remember those nights we all shared.

With love and gratitude

Staying creative & connected - feat. Akala Newman

“Taking this time to rest, to reflect and to recover, because without that, creativity can't come through. I think it's about not being so hard on yourself, because really we've done it once and we can do it again. We are experts now and we will stay creative and connected no matter what. We live in an age where we have the resources to do so.”

To my fellow creatives during lockdown:
“I think it comes down to being strong in who you are. Backing yourself. We are creators and story tellers at heart, so we know pain, we know what makes us happy. We know how to communicate this, and we can utilise our skills of expression during this time to hone our craft and who we are.”

Akala Newman is an artist, activist and academic.

Staying creative & connected - feat. AJ Lamarque

“I've found that creating funny videos and skits for social media has been a great way to break the monotony of being at home all the time and stay creative. It's fun to do and also I'm hoping they bring people joy too. I've had a few people reach out and say they’ve had a much welcomed break which has been comforting and keeping me connected.”

To my fellow creatives during lockdown:
“I think the pressure to create stuff and "build a career" during lockdown last year really impacted my mental health and this time I've been able to keep those pressures at bay. I'd say for anyone else feeling the same, it's ok to do bu**er all and to not be productive. If you don't want to do anything, that's totally valid!”

Staying creative & connected - feat. Harry Jun

“I like making dumb little cartoons on my iPad so I'm hoping to pump a couple more of those out. It's a fun alternative to stand-up and forces me to think of how I'd make something funny visually. Last week I did a little writing session over Zoom with my comedian mates and it was a good way to check-in and stay productive.”

To my fellow creatives during lockdown:
“It can be really fun to collaborate with others. If anyone's got any short audio clips (stand up bits/podcasts etc) that they'd think would be funny in a short cartoon format, send them through! I can't promise anything good, but it might be fun to make something together.”

Staying creative & connected - feat. Rob Carlton.

“I’m using lockdown to kick start a brand new project. Something nice and new and shiny so when we come out I feel I’ve added a big fresh thing to my deck, rather than tinkered at a lot of little things.”

To my fellow creatives during lockdown:
“I hope this time frees you up to read more widely, think more deeply, laugh more often, and sleep the f**k in and in and in. x.”

Come see Rob’s hilarious, heartfelt, and to-the-core relatable expression of how confusing and joyous it is to be alive, in Rob Carlton is Clearly Confused.

Tickets are available for 26th - 28th August at Giant Dwarf. Find out more here: https://giantdwarf.com.au/events/clearly-confused/

When lockdown is over, we have live music for you….

Akala Newman will be gracing our stage for Tiny Tunes on, Saturday July 24th.

Akala Newman is a Wiradjuri/ Gadigal woman who fuses her eclectic escapist sound with surreal pop, a splash of sexy and a hint of house. Her lyrics and voice of honey are effortlessly vulnerable. They can Stab like a knife or melt you like fire. Influenced from her teenage years by the wake of JOY, Tove Lo, Fka Twigs, Ziggy Ramo and Halsey, her music is flooded with melodic nostalgia, contrasted with electric cynicism.

Akala released her first debut single in 2019, “Heart For Free”, followed by “Shine on Me” in 2020. She then produced, directed and choreographed her first Music Video in 2020, “Burnt For You”,with an all First- Nations cast, representing the Blak body as beautiful, powerful and resilient.

“For this exhibition we highlight artists' perspectives and concerns around the use of Water. From climate change to drought, rising sea levels, and access to rivers and creeks for traditional practices, our water is sacred with spiritual connections to our existence.

Clean water for all communities is vital.

This exhibition is about creating an understanding around how we all can make a difference and start looking into ways around protecting Water for the next generation.”

Staying creative & connected - feat. Ben Lee.

“For me, like lots of artists, creativity is really a way of life, not something that requires a particular set of circumstances to be experienced. It continues whether there is an audience or not, whether anyone cares or not, and wherever I am.

Its about the way you roll out of bed in the morning! As a family, thats our focus - remembering to play, to ask questions, to be silly, to make each other laugh…thats what gets us through the day!”

A message for fellow creatives:
“I love you. If you are taking the hard and challenging road of being a creative human in this capitalist and mechanized world, you are my friend. Stay strong. Have fun. Keep chasing the impossible.”

Come and join Ben Lee and Ione Skye at their monthly variety show, Weirder Together, on Wednesday 4th August at Giant Dwarf.
