Earlier in the month, we took an origin trip to Peru to understand more about this outstanding variety: SL-09 (SL9). 🇵🇪🌱
Tucked high into the rugged, mist-veiled mountains of Incahuasi, Cusco, producers had spent years calling it “Inca Gesha.” The cup certainly backed up the hype - white florals, refined citrus, and incredible sweetness. But the cherries were notably small and round, not elongated like true Gesha.
Genetic testing finally cracked the case: it wasn’t Gesha at all, but SL-09, a historic Ethiopian lineage selection developed decades ago by Kenya’s Scott Agricultural Laboratories.
While largely abandoned in East Africa due to climate and disease pressures, SL9 quietly found its dream home in the Peruvian Andes.
Why does Incahuasi produce the world’s best SL-09?
- Extreme Elevation (2,000–2,400+ MASL): Cold nights force the cherries into a slow maturation cycle, concentrating sugars and building high bean density.
- Microclimate: The crisp air gives this variety the exact conditions it needs, resulting in exceptional flavour clarity and complexity.
On the Cupping Table: 🥄
Delicate, perfumed florals with juicy stonefruits and a sparkling, candied finish.
Because of the 🏔️ high elevation and unique microclimate in Incahuasi, the growing cycle is extended, leading to a late harvest.
Currently, these coffees are being carefully processed and dried at origin.
