This isn’t easy to write.
Port Burger was something I took on with heart and high hopes. The dream of running a venue by the coast, serving great food, bringing people together, and creating something special, was something I truly believed in.
But hospitality is a beast. And despite the passion, long hours, and everything poured into it, sometimes it just isn’t enough.
The reality is, running a small business in the current climate is incredibly tough. Rising costs, coastal challenges, and the day-to-day pressure of trying to keep things afloat have made this journey far harder than I ever anticipated.
Still, what stands out the most isn't the struggle — it's the people. The amazing team that stood beside me. The friends and family who cheered me on. And the customers who showed up, again and again, with smiles, support, and kind words. That’s what I’ll carry with me.
I’ve learned more than I ever imagined — about running a business, about resilience, and about the kind of leader I want to be. Even in the hardest moments, there were sparks of connection, laughter, and community. And that made it all worthwhile.
While it would’ve been nice to see more meaningful support for small business from those in power, especially during tough times like these, I’ve come to realise that real strength comes from the people around you — not from policy.
To my staff: thank you for giving it your all. Your dedication didn’t go unnoticed, and I’ll do whatever I can to support you moving forward.
To our customers, friends, and extended Port Burger family: thank you. This chapter might be closing, but the experience has shaped me in ways I’ll never forget.
Here’s to what comes next.
With gratitude and one final burger flip,
Lee
