For thirty-eight years, Jamie “Slim Jim” Mercanti has been fronting one of the most successful cover bands in Western Australian music history. Slim Jim has performed more than 7 500 gigs throughout Western Australia – setting a precedent within the local music industry for professionalism and demand. The FATTS/PHATTS created house attendance records at many venues throughout WA, including the Silver Slipper (Nedlands), the Ocean Beach Hotel (Cottesloe), Plaistowes Bar (West Perth), the Coronado (Nedlands), the Brewery Alehouse (Nedlands), the Boulevard Alehouse (Victoria Park), the Babylon (Victoria Park), the Breakwater Tavern (Hillarys), the Kalgoorlie Hotel / Judd’s Pub, Trafalgar’s (Bunbury), the Dunsborough Hotel, The Bog Northbridge and the Aberdeen Hotel. In 1988, Slim Jim & the FATTS Band received five nominations at the Western Australian Rock Music Industry Awards - including “Most Popular Band”. In the same year, Slim Jim was nominated in the “Most Popular Entertainer” category. In 1994, a reader’s poll in “The West Australian” newspaper voted Slim Jim & the FATTS Band as the “Most Popular Commercial Rock Band in WA”.
“Live at the OBH” was Slim Jim & the FATTS Band’s debut album. It was the highest selling independently released album for 1988. The album successfully captured the spirit of an audience supporting their favourite local band at their favourite local venue. Slim Jim & the FATTS Band were the resident band on “Basil’s Footy Show” (Channel 7) between 1999 - 2001. This popular local football panel show had an average weekly audience of over 350,000 viewers throughout Western Australia. The Basil’s Footy Show panellists included Adrian Barich, Karl Langdon, Scott Watters, Shaun McManus, Chris Mainwaring, Peter Sumich, Heath Black, Scott Cummings and host - Basil Zempilas.
