Remo's Schmear on Simpson (Remo’s) will appeal to a vibrant, eclectic group of locals that reflect the creative and community - oriented spirit of Northcote. Such individuals may have a nostalgic appreciation of TV shows like Seinfeld. Enjoying the blend of humour and social commentary. Much like Seinfeld, Remo's is a setting where regulars and newcomers alike gather, not just for the coffee and wine, but for the stories. Over a glass of Grenache or a shared Schmear Platter, patrons laugh, vent, and overshare, turning the café wine bar into a hub where community and culture come alive. A place where moments become punchlines, and punchlines become part of the culture, just like the beloved episodes of Seinfeld we still quote to this day.

Australian importers of Birra VIOLA are located in Alphington, not far from Simpson Street Northcote...

As highlighted in previous posts, Remo’s is all about sharing stories and celebrating Tuscan culture.

So when deciding on the type of beer Remo’s should stock, the tick boxes are simple:
✔️ Being unique and not easily available,
✔️ Connected to Italian culture in some way,
✔️ Have a great taste, and just as important,
✔️ Include a story behind the brand!

The Birra Arduini Brewery located in Emilia Romania (Italy), just a stone’s throw away from northern Tuscany, produce Birra VIOLA. The VIOLA beers are dedicated to the brewery founder grandfather Mario.

Current owner recalls… “When I was little, my grandfather took me on outings in the car and, being a motor enthusiast. He always repeated to me, strictly in Romagna dialect….
sent cm la va sta machine, la va com’e na viola…
which translated means…
feel how this car goes, it goes like a viola… The car was a Fiat 127, purple in colour.”

Remo’s Schmear On Simpson (Remo’s) is expected to open its doors by June 2026…

Inspired by the traditional Enoteca Toscana. Remo’s will open three days a week and operate as an Italian-style café bar.

Opening at midday and throughout the afternoon, Remo’s will offer both coffee, non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages alongside food (bagels and panini) options. By late afternoon and evening, Remo’s will become a ‘shrine to wine’, specialising in imported and local Tuscan style wines.

The aim is to blend the daytime café culture with the evening wine bar vibe, making it a versatile space.
