From one perspective, having a bar named after you is a somewhat dubious honour. In Tanner's case, it's an indication of the extent to which he was happy to meet students on their own terms. He was always involved in the student life of the university, and was extremely generous and supportive. Many remember him with great fondness, and suggest that Tanner was the exemplar of the university spirit

in Newcastle. Of course, that being the case, it's quite apt that we acknowledge that with a bar. So if you are one of the people who have, like Godfrey Tanner, realised that university life isn't just about studying, the Godfrey Tanner Bar is a place for you.

The GT Bar is currently undergoing a transformational fit-out to deliver an exciting new food and beverage venue for students and staff 🍴

The new fit-out will include a casual lounge area and bar which flows out to the licensed Derkenne Courtyard, and a dining area inside with a range a menu options for you to share a meal with friends and colleagues.

From now until 30 March 2020, the bar’s interior is set to be demolished to get ready for the new tenant. During this time there will be some noisy works inside and around the bar so your patience and understanding is appreciated.

When the space reopens in mid-2020, you’ll have a fabulous new venue to meet, grab a drink or a bite to eat in a casual all-day dining setting 🍷

Until then, the iconic Bar on the Hill is open for business as usual to meet your needs!
