🌿 THIS IS WHAT MULLUM ROOTS IS ALL ABOUT 🌿

Last year at Mullum Roots Festival, I came across a young local bloke busking in the streets of Mullumbimby.

We got chatting about songwriting. He told me he’d never written a song. That night, he went home and wrote his first song.

The next day, he tracked me down at the festival to play it for me. I was so taken with the moment that I recorded it.

Before we parted ways, I made him a deal.If he could write 10 songs before the next Mullum Roots Festival, I’d give him a spot on the lineup.

Well, he did it.And true to my word, he’ll be performing at Mullum Roots Festival 2027 along with many others incredible acts that will be revealed very soon.

From busking on the streets to playing the festival. That’s the magic of Mullum Roots. It’s about music, community, discovery and giving people a chance. And sometimes, the best things happen when you least expect them.

There is so much to share after a weekend of amazing music and stories, but I’ll start with this one because it’s my favourite.

This fella was busking old time banjo songs on the street in between the venues and I stopped and watched and listened to him and then asked him if he’d ever written any songs. He said that he didn’t because he thought they always sounded weird whenever he attempted to. Of course, as a song writer, I told him they always sounded weird when they first come out and you just have to push through…

Anyway, the next morning he approached me telling me that he’d written his very first song that night and asked if he could play it for me. So he sat down right there and then and played me this song. I didn’t weep or anything (not)!

I love this story because it’s EXACTLY why I created this music festival. To promote and encourage original music. His name is Martin Thornton, he lives locally and you’ll be seeing more of him…if I have it my way!
