Coal Lounge

Coal Lounge Pop up Art space (ARI) in Morwell by artist Hartmut Veit ecological art performances & sculptural in This one in Tarwin st was one of them.

Between 2014-2018 I created a series of temporary art & exhibition spaces in MORWELL and Traralgon which I called “COALounges”. Another one was in 208 Commercial Rd, Morwell (the old Optus shop). Occupying these derelict shops afforded me a place to stay and to exhibit my coal artworks, conduct my research and interact with the community on an ongoing basis

These pop-up COALounges were offered to

the community as a new alternative, albeit temporary exhibition venue for contemporary art and my exploration of brown coal as an art material. Set up like a funky living room with a Danish retro couch and lounge chairs i create a welcoming space for folks to come in and have a chat about coal, art and life in the Valley. After studying (MA at Monash in Churchill) and making art works with brown coal in the Latrobe Valley over the last 5 years I had made the move to live in the Latrobe Valley to set up these pop-up galleries in empty shopfronts. It also meant that I was able vote here in the Federal election – something important to me as I feel passionate about local issues and the challenges facing the community. Ps.: after the closure of the Hazelwood Mine in 2018 I moved back to set up a new permanent art studio & exhibition space called Stanley Ave Studio in 61 Stanley Ave, Mt Waverley. Find “ Stanley Ave Studio” on FB and Instagram

For those who missed my radio interview on Tuesday on ABC Radio National on Michael Cathcart’s “Stageshow” below is a link to the podcast.
The wonderfully eloquent Lara Stevens from University of Melbourne did an amazing job framing the challenges of climate change for the arts and interviewing me about my work with coal in the communities of the Latrobe Valley.
Just a bit of patience is required as my segment is about 40 mins in, after the famous stage writer V and her Va**na Monologues- what an amazing woman! Thanks also to Kim Jirik for his skillful production and to Michael Cathcart for his kind and generous support!

The Va**na Monologues is one of the most influential pieces of theatre in recent history. Written by V (formerly Eve Ensler), the play was first performed 25 years ago this year. V's latest project is a musical that places the climate crisis centre stage. Also, ABC Top 5 Arts resident Dr Lara Steven...

If you like and care you can read, share, spread, use, comment etc. I would love your feedback and hear what you think, especially if I’ve had contact with you during the research period, which took place in the Latrobe Valley, beginning with the Hazelwood Mine Fire in 2014 until the closure of the Hazelwood Mine in 2017.
Enjoy!

Finally handed in my (coal) thesis yesterday.
A short summary: it questions human relationships with geological matter and used brown coal as a artmedium to investigate the role that coal plays in Latrobe Valley communities with focus on Morwell), It did that through combining socially-engaged, participatory, practice-led artistic research with an ethnographic sensibility to investigate the community's response to living in, and among coal. I wanted to create a dialogue through art and better understand the complex web of changes affecting these communities, who are in transition and impacted by the closure of coal-fired power stations and sweeping changes in power generation.

"Sweeping Changes" new exhibition of works by Hartmut Veit.

I'm making new sculptural art works with (coal) dust in Morwell, collected from the community. Currently also building a mobile cleaning cart sculpture from old wheelchair/bike/rowing/bits of junk to stage new cleaning performances in Morwell and Traralgon over the next few weeks.
Sooooo If you are in Morwell on Friday 17 June at the Winter Night Festival drop into my "COALounge" pop-up gallery for the exhibition opening of my new show called " Sweeping changes" where you can see these new works. On for only one week!

And if you live in the Valley "I need your dust"!
