HERE FOR A GOOD TIME – NOT A LONG TIME

CREMORNE may well be the latest inner-city location to be, yet it is Melbourne’s oldest.
The name, “Cremorne” comes from the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens (C.P.G) 1852-’62, Australia’s first large scale centre of the Arts - and it happened right here!

Amongst its attractions were restaurants and bars, military bands, boating on an artificial lake, nightly fireworks, lavish banquets and live music played from the main rotunda. Pantomimes and popular theatre productions were staged. C.P.G hosted Australia’s first menagerie of exotic animals, the first hot air balloon, and a large-scale cyclorama.

In the brutish Victorian colony of the mid 19th Century, Cremorne Pleasure Gardens was where the gold diggers could party; ladies clad in their finery could promenade and settlers could escape the harsh reality of their daily lives. Illuminated with gaslight, Cremorne Pleasure Gardens was otherworldly, and elevated patrons to dream of possibilities and then, almost overnight, it disappeared, leaving few clues that it had ever existed at all.

150 years later, Cremorne Pleasure Gardens was reborn. Housed in a converted Cremorne Street warehouse, KaDo Warehouse. C.P.G has thrived for the past 10years: 2011-2021. Sometimes bar, sometimes gallery, cabaret & jazz club, cocktails & good times…and then the plague came to town.

Now the pARTy is over and it’s time to move on. I’ve shut up shop and sold up all my booze, bits n bobs. The kitsch has gone. The art relocated and the warehouse is up for auction next week.

When CPG closed in 1862, it was briefly appropriated by an insane asylum.
It seems appropriate then, that Eastern European hackers have recently taken over KaDo Warehouse’s social media and turned the Insta site into a Crypto Currency store. Apologies to those who are inundated with messages. Its not me. It’s the crazy crypto currency bots!

To the diverse creatives, the musicians, cabaret artistes, visual artists, poets, the shakers & movers – a big THANK YOU.

And to those of you who came to see what the mayhem was all about and to sample my cocktail concoctions – THANK YOU.

Also thank you to the City of Yarra, Victorian State Government, Creative Victoria and Match Lab for your support of the range of activities here over the decade.

It’s truly been a joyous 10years.
So much fun!
So may fabulous memories.
Such a good time.
