ISTORY:
Port Melbourne Cricket Club was established in 1874. It was one of the original teams in Melbourne's District Cricket competition comprising of 12 competing clubs; along with Port Melbourne were Carlton, East Melbourne, Essendon, Fitzroy, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, South Melbourne, University and Williamstown. These teams competed in the first District Cricket season. In 1908 it was realised that a system of promotion and relegation was unworkable, and the clubs taking part in District Cricket were divided into District and Sub-District teams - Port Melbourne was one of eight original competing teams in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA), along with Brighton, Caulfield, Coburg, Elsternwick, Hawthorn, Malvern, and Williamstown. In 2002/2003, Port Melbourne joined one the largest metropolitan competitions in the country, the Victorian Turf Cricket Association (VTCA). 1st XI glory eluded us despite many grand final appearances, however we collected the silverware in the lower grades on no less that 5 occasions throughout the years in the VTCA. In 2016/17 the South Clubs of the VTCA joined the Cricket Southern Bayside competition, which was run by Cricket Victoria. With many finals appearances throughout these years, the ultimate success of a premiership eluded us at 1st XI Level. Our 2nd XI tasted premiership glory in the White Ball Championship in 2019/20 and our Masters XI have dominated in recent years with back to back premierships in 2019/20 and 2020/21. After a $2.5m redevelopment of the ground in 2018/19 and boasting arguably the best playing surface in Melbourne outside first class cricket grounds, PMCC received appropriate recognition of ‘Ground of the Year’ in season 2020/21. In season 2021/22 we will compete in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association after success campaigning for inclusion in their expansion program, where the association will grow from 28 clubs to 32 clubs. After just on 20 years, we will return ‘home’ to Subbies, and we look forward to what lies ahead as we enter into this journey and the next stage of our famous club.
