Our festive season has always looked a little different.

It’s less fireside, more poolside. Bare feet under the table. Wet hair at lunch. Something cold to eat between swims and a hooded towel worn for most of the afternoon.

Maybe that’s why we’ve never felt too attached to the traditional picture of the season.

We already have a pretty good one of our own.

Funny how the decorations we become most attached to are rarely the fanciest ones. They’re the ones we’ve pulled out year after year, each with a little story attached.

And to think, some of those stories are only just beginning. ❤️

We think decorating the tree is one of those traditions that gets better when you stop trying to make it perfect.

Let the kids choose the branches. Put three ornaments suspiciously close together. Bring out the old favourites, add a few new ones and resist the urge to rearrange everything once they’ve gone to bed.

Because eventually, the ornaments become more than decorations. They remind you of a year, a person, a particular little pair of hands that insisted that was exactly where it belonged.

Today’s new ornament is tomorrow’s old favourite.

When you’re little, nothing tests your patience quite like a countdown.

Knowing there’s something hiding in that next pocket and being told you have to wait until tomorrow? Agony.

That’s exactly why we love an advent calendar. Fill each pocket with tiny treats, little treasures and surprises chosen just for them, then watch it become the first thing they run to every morning.

Bring it out year after year and, before long, the countdown becomes part of the nostalgia too.

Twenty years is a long time to ask anything to hold your attention.

Your taste will change. You’ll move things around. You might move house entirely. And something you couldn’t imagine living without today may eventually have you wondering what you were thinking.

So how do you know what’s worth bringing home? Maybe it’s less about predicting what you’ll love in twenty years, and more about understanding why you love it now.

Is it you, or is it just having a moment?

Are you a collector even if you don’t call yourself one?

We tend to think of collectors as people with very serious shelves and an encyclopaedic knowledge of something obscure.

But look around your bedroom. The stack of books you refuse to part with. Ceramics picked up here and there. Art from different chapters. Textiles, trinkets, things brought home from travels.

Perhaps collecting isn’t always intentional.

Sometimes you just keep choosing what you love until, one day, you realise you’ve built a world around yourself.

Some pieces are basically destined to become hand-me-downs.

The shirt your daughter has already called dibs on. The dress your sister borrows with increasingly vague promises of returning it. The piece that somehow looks better on everyone who wears it.

Perhaps that’s the ultimate compliment to a good find.

Not that you keep it pristine forever, but that someone else eventually loves it enough to claim it.

Here’s a design opinion we’ll happily defend: a home shouldn’t look like you discovered your taste all at once.

Taste changes. You travel. You see more. You learn more. You inherit things. You make the occasional questionable purchase and, every so often, one that you’ll love for decades.

A good home should have evidence of all of it. Choosing things because they mean something to you rather than because they belong to a particular moment. Letting different eras and chapters sit beside one another. Knowing what to keep, what to add and what has genuinely run its course.

After all, the common thread doesn’t need to be a decade, style or colour palette.

It can simply be you.

Hi, Pheebs here.

I’ve always thought travel is one of the best ways to sharpen your eye. There’s something about being somewhere unfamiliar that makes you notice things differently. The colours, spaces and little details you photograph without even thinking.

I recently spent two weeks in Seoul with my sister for our 40th birthdays, and came home with a camera roll full of exactly that.

A few things I noticed along the way. x
