📅 Plan ahead for September: Korean public holidays 📅 ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ ⁠

🔹25-27 September: Chuseok (추석) - Businesses engaging with Korean partners are encouraged to plan ahead for Chuseok (추석), from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 September 2026.

Along with Seollal (Lunar New Year), Chuseok is one of Korea’s two most important traditional holidays. During this period, families travel across the country to gather, honour their ancestors and celebrate the autumn harvest.

Government offices, banks and many businesses will be closed, while corporate activity and response times may slow in the days immediately before and after the holiday. Australian organisations working with Korean stakeholders should factor this period into meeting schedules, project timelines, approvals and deliveries.

Gift-giving is also an established part of Chuseok business culture. Companies commonly exchange carefully presented gifts as a gesture of appreciation and goodwill, reflecting the importance of relationships in Korean business.

South Korean steelmaker POSCO has joined Qantas and Airbus in backing Jet Zero Australia through its latest capital raising, strengthening Australia–Korea collaboration in sustainable aviation fuel.

The investment will support Jet Zero’s plans to establish a domestic sustainable aviation fuel industry, including Project Ulysses in North Queensland. The project aims to convert agricultural by-products into lower-emissions aviation fuel, supporting the decarbonisation of Australia’s aviation sector.

POSCO’s participation highlights the growing opportunities for Australian and Korean companies to collaborate across renewable energy, decarbonisation and emerging industries.

✨ Day 2 of the 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting ✨

The 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting concluded at Adelaide Oval, bringing together senior leaders from Australia and Korea for a full day of high-level discussion under the theme, “Trusted Partners in a Changing World”.

The program commenced with an Opening Ceremony featuring remarks from The Hon. Martin Ferguson AM, Chair of the Australia–Korea Business Council; Dr. Chang, In Hwa, Chair of the Korea–Australia Business Council and CEO of POSCO Holdings; Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs; and a video message by Park Jung-sung, Minister for Trade, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, Republic of Korea.

Their remarks highlighted the strength of the Australia–Korea relationship and the importance of continued cooperation between government and industry.

Discussions throughout the day explored:
🎤 Trusted Partners in a Changing World, examining the evolving strategic and economic landscape and its implications for the Australia–Korea relationship.
🎤 Future Opportunities in Steel, Battery Materials and Critical Minerals, exploring how Australia and Korea can strengthen supply chains and support the industries of the future.
🎤 Innovation, R&D and Commercialisation, focusing on opportunities to transform research and emerging technologies into practical bilateral partnerships.
🎤 Energy Transition, Decarbonisation and Emerging Technologies, examining the role of collaboration, investment and innovation in supporting shared energy and net-zero ambitions.

Thank you also to the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Korea in Australia, Jimin Kim for delivering remarks at the Joint Meeting Luncheon.

The program concluded with reflections from The Hon Martin Ferguson AM and Dr In-hwa Chang, followed by the signing of the Joint Statement, reaffirming both councils’ commitment to strengthening the Australia–Korea economic partnership.

Sydney Airport is central not only to Australia’s commercial aviation industry, but also to the country’s overall economic prosperity. The Airport plays a strategic role in connecting individuals, facilitating trade activity and providing services. Fundamentally, the role of the Airport captures the operational ‘core’, which comprises the central operation of the Airport facility, including its runway infrastructure, terminals and critical aviation safety and security. However, this core activity is a subset of the broader activity that occurs on the Airport precinct, including airline operations, retail and tourism services and landside transport and logistics. Sydney Airport is Australia’s largest and busiest, moving more domestic and international passengers than any other airport in Australia. It is vital for connecting Australians and facilitating international and domestic freight.

✨ Day 1 of the 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting ✨

Day 1 of the 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting brought together senior business leaders, government representatives and industry experts from Australia and Korea at Adelaide Oval under this year’s theme, “Trusted Partners in a Changing World.” 🇦🇺🇰🇷

Throughout the day, delegates exchanged insights, explored emerging areas of cooperation and strengthened connections across the Australia–Korea partnership through the Australian and the Korean Delegation Event, and Space, AI and Critical Minerals Roundtables.

The day concluded with the Welcome Cocktail Reception and Welcome Dinner, bringing together more than 220 Australian and Korean business leaders, government representatives, delegates and stakeholders for an evening of conversation, connection and celebration. 🥂

Hosted by the Welcome Dinner Presenting Partner, M Resources, and supported by the Welcome Dinner Australian Beef Showcase Partner, Harmony Agriculture & Food Company, the evening commenced with welcoming remarks from The Hon. Peter Malinauskas MP, Premier of South Australia, followed by a Welcome to Country.

Guests then heard welcoming remarks from The Hon. Martin Ferguson AM, Chair of the AKBC, and Dr Chang, In Hwa, Chair of the KABC and CEO of POSCO Holdings.

The evening also featured remarks from Senator the Hon. Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism, and The Hon. Chris Picton MP, South Australian Minister for State Development, alongside live musical performances and a special toast led by Young Mi Youn, Chairperson of the Korea Importers Association, and Matt Latimore, Founder and President of M Resources.

Thank you also to our Event Partners, AKBC Board Members, our Joint Meeting delegates, representatives from government and industry, and all guests who contributed to a memorable opening day.

🎤 SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT | 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting

We are pleased to announce that Goran Galic, Partner at A&O Shearman, will be speaking at the 47th AKBC-KABC Joint Meeting, to be held in Adelaide on 1–2 September 2026.

Goran will moderate the Future Opportunities in Steel, Battery Materials and Critical Minerals session, bringing more than 20 years of experience advising clients across the mining, energy and resources sectors. Goran is an energy, resources and projects specialist with experience across project acquisitions, joint ventures, developments, operations and regulation. He has been involved in major mineral and LNG projects in Australia and internationally.

🎤 SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT | 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting

We are pleased to announce that Peter Cleary, Principal at Glenoak Energy and Board Director at the Australia-Korea Business Council, will be speaking at the 47th Australia–Korea Business Council (AKBC)-Korea–Australia Business Council (KABC) Joint Meeting, to be held in Adelaide on 1–2 September 2026.

Peter will moderate the Opening Panel, Trusted Partners in a Changing World, bringing extensive experience across the energy sector and the Australia–Korea business relationship.

Peter is pursuing a portfolio of opportunities as an adviser and board member, following a distinguished executive career in the energy sector. He moved from executive life after leaving Santos at the end of 2015, where he held two commercial Vice President positions.

Prior to Santos, Peter had a 24-year career with BP, where he held senior management positions across Australia, Indonesia, Korea, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi and the United Kingdom.

Peter is currently a Board Director of the Australia-Korea Business Council and the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee.

We are pleased to announce that Clare Pope, Partner at Gilbert + Tobin, will be speaking at the 47th AKBC-KABC Joint Meeting, to be held in Adelaide on 1–2 September 2026.

Clare will moderate the session Energy Transition, Decarbonisation and Emerging Technologies, bringing extensive experience across the mining, energy, power/renewables and infrastructure sectors.

Clare joined Gilbert + Tobin as a Partner in the Energy + Resources team in 2023. Prior to this, she was a partner in the legal team at PwC, where she led the practice in Western Australia.

She specialises in M&A, joint ventures and project development across the mining, energy, power/renewables and infrastructure sectors. Clare is also an AKBC Board Director.

Korea Gas Corporation, commonly known as KOGAS, is the largest LNG-importing company in the world and is the key organization mandated by the government of the Republic of Korea to provide energy security through the provision of competitive and stable supplies of natural gas for the Korean industry and market.

It’s world leading LNG and natural gas infrastructure comprises of 5 LNG import and regasification terminals strategically positioned throughout the Korean peninsula which includes a total of 77 tanks capable of storing 12.2 million m3 of LNG and a natural gas pipeline network totalling 5,082 km in length.
