A little while back, we shared publicly that the tavern holds a secret beneath its basement levels.

Now sealed off, a tunnel once ran from the building to the Yarra River. It is believed to have been used to transport beer secretly, avoiding taxes in the early days.

As of June 2026, with the recent works being done to Bank Place, we can officially confirm with clear imagery what said tunnel looks like.

If you haven't been to the steakhouse upstairs at the Mitre Tavern, you're missing out.

Old Melbourne charm, serious cuts, and a room that feels like it's been around forever, because it has.

The Mitre Tavern began its life as a modest private home, shipped in sections from England and reassembled on Melbourne soil.

Its steeply pitched roof still seems to wait for snow that never came, a quiet reminder of a climate it was never meant for.

Before the skyscrapers. Before the trams. Before the gold rush changed everything, this little tavern on Bank Place was already here.

Shoutout to one of our favourites here at The Mitre, The Mountain Culture Status Quo, a highly acclaimed, 5.2% ABV New England Pale Ale brewed in the Blue Mountains.

Famed for its hazy and tropical profile, it has dominated the GABS Hottest 100 craft beer poll, winning #1 from 2022 to 2025.

Another one from the archives: this shot of our Mitre Tavern from 1987.

During this decade, in January 1980, a terrible theft occurred in which the iconic, over 100-year-old brass plaque reading “Mitre Tavern Bill of Fare” was stolen!

The Mitre Tavern all began as a private little home in 1837. It was transported in sections from England and is recognised by the Melbourne City Council as Melbourne's oldest building.

The steeply pitched roof still waits for the snow that was never to come, and the tiny windows reflect an ancient ‘window tax’ from the mother country.
