In June 1948, the Soviet Union blocked all road, rail and canal access to West Berlin. Isolated deep within Soviet-controlled territory, more than two million residents suddenly faced severe shortages of food, fuel and essential supplies. The blockade marked one of the first major confrontations of the Cold War.
Rather than abandon the city or force their way through by military means, the Western Allies launched an unprecedented humanitarian operation. Under the British codename Operation Plainfare, alongside the American Operation Vittles, aircraft began flying continuous missions through the three agreed air corridors into West Berlin.
For almost eleven months, transport aircraft landed every few minutes, day and night. Between June 1948 and September 1949, more than 277,000 flights delivered over 2.3 million tons of coal, food, medicine and other essential supplies, sustaining the city entirely by air.
The Berlin Airlift became one of the defining operations of the early Cold War. More than a remarkable logistical achievement, it demonstrated that determination, cooperation and precision could overcome a blockade without a single shot being fired.
