NAAE members met with Peter Garrett, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth; Senator Christine Milne, Greens spokesperson for the Arts, and Helen O’Neil, adviser to Arts Minister Simon Crean in Canberra on Tuesday. The NAAE canvassed strategies that will prepare generalist and specialist teachers for implementation of the developing Australian arts curriculum.

“Teachers need to be adequately prepared to teach the new Australian arts curriculum” says NAAE Chair, Julie Dyson, “otherwise the aspiration for all young Australians to have access to sequential and continuous learning in dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts will be difficult to realise”.

Briony Heneberry writes -- This year I piloted a subject called ‘Metacognitive Gaming’ at Year 9, a subject that uses computer and console games as texts in the same way as conventional English classes use print and film media.

Throughout the course of the semester, students have delved deeply into analysing the way in which games are marketed, why they’re such a popular form of entertainment, why players suspend moral codes when playing, and other aspects of gaming skills and gaming culture.

Published in The Age, (November 18 2010) is an extract from the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture, delivered (November 17 2010) at the Screen Producers Association of Australia given by The Movie Show's Margaret Pomeranz.

I look with awe at our 177-medal total at the recent Commonwealth Games. We trumped England, with a population in excess of 60 million. We trumped India with a billion. It's an indication of how much money this country is prepared to fork out to back winners.
