Whisky of the Week: Ardnahoe Cask Strength — Batch 2

5 years old. First-fill bourbon barrels only. Bottled at raw cask strength, no colouring, no chill-filtration. This is Islay whisky with nothing to hide behind.

Coastal brine, earthy peat and rich cocoa on the nose. Orchard fruit, herbal tea and salted caramel on the palate, before a smoky, citrus-laced finish that lingers.

If you think you know peated whisky, Ardnahoe will make you think again! young, powerful, and already punching above its age.

Whisky of the Week: Glen Scotia 18

Straight from Campbeltown, one of Scotland’s smallest whisky regions and once its whisky capital.

18 years in bourbon casks, finished in first fill Oloroso sherry. Honey, vanilla, and fudge, with a whisper of sea spray and a floral touch, finishing long and warm with a hint of funk.

Love Springbank? This is Campbeltown’s other side. Same coastal DNA, more sherried sweetness, easier on the wallet.

Huge thanks to Kate for the invite, and to Dean and the team for walking us through each release and sharing the story behind them. Tasting something as bold as the Energy Cask experiment is exactly why I love this industry, whisky people are some of the most generous, curious people out there.

This week: Glenglassaugh Sandend and the 12 Year Old, both named for that Aberdeenshire coastline they call home. Sandend (50.5%, bourbon/sherry/manzanilla casks) is buttery vanilla and tropical fruit with waves of salted caramel, pineapple and sea salt. The 12 Year Old (45%, bourbon/sherry/red wine casks) is deeper and more layered , stone fruit, toasted vanilla, salted chocolate, apricot and fig, still with that coastal edge running through it. Same salt air, two different moods. Try them side by side.

This week’s whisky: Deanston 18. A different kind of Highland malt.

Matured entirely in first-fill bourbon casks for 18 years, unpeated, non-chill filtered, 46.3%. No sherry here, just pure ex-bourbon character turned up to eleven.

Barley sugar, vanilla, crisp apple up front, with honey, gingerbread and a touch of white pepper spice underneath. Rich and waxy on the palate, finishing dry and warming.
