Earlier this year, and before the first bottle of LIRICA was even released, the vineyard itself was named a finalist in the Young Gun of Wine Top 50 Vineyards of Australia.

And honestly… we think that’s pretty huge. To receive national recognition before release says everything about the site, the farming and the level of intent behind this project.

This is not a project built around scale, trend or regional marketing narratives; this is years of truly hard work finally being recognised. LIRICA is one tiny vineyard, one single site, and a shared vision between Rob and Lee.

“I spent many years searching for a Grand Cru Cabernet Sauvignon site in Margaret River to bring my energy to,” says Lee, “to grow and share a wine that I believe can contribute positively to the reputation of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Margaret River.”

Those of you who have visited our cellar door will know just how much of her heart Kellie has poured into the Dillybag Collective Gallery and The Colour Story wellness-based art program.

What started through her work as a Remote Area Nurse in the Northern Territory has grown into a five-year women's wellbeing program supporting traditional weaving, bush dye knowledge, language and cultural practice across the homeland communities of Nganambala, Merrepen, Nemarluk and Wudicuplyderr.

Today, we're helping raise funds through the Australian Cultural Fund to support the next stage of this work - taking women back onto Country with Elders to record stories, language and cultural knowledge, ensuring it can be shared with future generations.

If you've ever admired the artworks in the gallery, purchased a piece, or spent time chatting with Kellie about the women and communities behind them, we'd love your support. You can help by:
- Purchasing artwork from the Dillybag Collective Gallery
-Making a donation to The Colour Story via the Australian Cultural Fund
- Sharing this project with others

Every contribution helps support cultural knowledge, language preservation and women's wellbeing in community.

In the winery, the philosophy behind LIRICA is pretty simple: don't construct, but guide the balanced fruit to an exeptional site-driven wine.

Hand picked. Destemmed. Whole berries. Indigenous yeast. Open fermenters. Gentle hand plunging. Thirty-three days on skins. Basket pressed. Unfined. Unfiltered.

“LIRICA is intentionally and unashamedly a single site expression, old-vine wine,” says Mr Barval himself.

In this way, the vineyard is always the main voice, and with LIRICA, Cabernet Sauvignon truly sings.

Planted in 1974, the LIRICA-Hutton Vineyard is a remarkable 0.85-hectare site in the heart of Wilyabrup, surrounded by some of Margaret River's most esteemed vineyards and producers. This Wilyabrup vineyard is a culmination of years of obsessive attention.

“At this scale, every vine is a decision,” explains Lee Haselgrove. “Pruning, shoot thinning, crop load - it’s all done vine by vine.”

This is single vineyard wine in the truest sense of the term.

LIRICA started long before there was a wine in bottle.

Rob had driven past this tiny vineyard for years while working in Wilyabrup, and Lee had spent many vintages diligently refining the site, rebuilding the soils and learning exactly what the vines need and were capable of. And then, somewhere between conversations about Barolo, tannins and what actually makes great wine, the collaboration came together.

“It wasn’t just about making wine from the site,” says Lee Haselgrove. “It was about making a single vineyard expression in collaboration with Rob and his considered approach.”

Three vintages later, LIRICA is nearly ready to be shared... Join our Club or sign up to the allocation list and get first dibs on this iconic, vineyard-driven, limited Cabernet Sauvignon.

You may have seen some rumblings about this wine amongst all the Cabin Fever hype… so we thought it was probably time to finally put a name (and the faces) to it.

Introducing LIRICA. A tiny-production Cabernet Sauvignon from a 52-year-old vineyard in Wilyabrup, shaped by a collaboration between Mr Barval winemaker Rob Gherardi and highly regarded viticulturist Lee Haselgrove.
