In 1983, the Ash Wednesday fires destroyed the town of Macedon. One building survived. The pub.

More than 250 people sheltered inside while everything around them burned. A fire officer drove out at 3am and told journalists he could see one house and one pub still standing.

The pub has been there since 1865. Sally Gerbert took it over, renovated it and reopened it last June as the Macedon Village Hotel — new windows framing Mount Macedon, local wines and gins, a community that had been without a pub for five years finally coming home.

It just won Victoria's best regional pub at the AHA Awards. Less than twelve months after opening.
