At the Flying Pigeon, we love to share some amazing stories about the lovely people we met along the journey. We appreciate you taking the time to read and cherish the beautiful products we share with you. This is another wonderful story -

Caz and Iain Luke are a remarkable couple who have spent a lifetime contributing to their community and building a wonderful life together. Iain worked as a carpenter and after Caz’s 35 years of dedicated service at Williamsons Foodworks, she has established her own successful bookkeeping business, where she continues to support local businesses with the same warmth, reliability, and commitment.

Together, they raised three outstanding sons — Nathan, a doctor, Jeremy, a landscaper, and Dylan, who is soon to qualify as a diesel mechanic.

Their wine journey began in 2013 when Iain started working at Bindi, initially renovating the winery and family home. What began with hammer and nails soon grew into a passion for vines and winemaking, as Iain moved into vineyard management and worked alongside Michael Dhillon in the winery.

Inspired by this new chapter, the family decided to make their own wine in 2016, sourcing Shiraz from the beautifully cared-for Col Mountain vineyard in Heathcote. Originally made for family and friends, their wines quickly became something worth sharing.

Today, they continue to pour their hearts into every bottle. They have planted Pinot Noir at their home in Bullengarook and have also crafted Grenache RosƩ and Cabernet blends from the Macedon Ranges.

The name Thirty 8 is simple and deeply personal — it’s the number of their property. The sketch on the label is their family home, built by Iain in the early 2000s, a place they are incredibly proud of and one that reflects the same values found in their wines: hard work, dedication, family, and craftsmanship.

We’re proud to be sharing the Thirty 8 wines at The Flying Pigeon. It’s more than just a wine; it’s the story of a family, a home, and a passion that has grown from the ground up.

This Saturday, we’ll be taking the rare opportunity to close our doors for a special reason — to attend Noah’s Debutante Ball.

Working in hospitality often means sacrificing weekends, missing some family gatherings, celebrations, and special occasions while everyone else is enjoying theirs. We know many in the industry understand this feeling well.

So this weekend, we’re taking the chance to step away together, celebrate an important event, and enjoy a night off as a family.

Thank you for your understanding, ongoing support, and for always being part of our journey. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday & Friday evening. šŸ¤

Traditional Har Gow was crafted with a delicate dough made from tapioca starch and corn starch, mixed with hot water to partially cook the dough before kneading. This method gives the dumpling wrapper its signature translucent appearance, soft chew, and slightly sticky texture. Skilled dim sum chefs would traditionally use the side of a cleaver to carefully press each wrapper by hand, a technique that takes years to master.

As Har Gow became more commercialised and machine-produced, the original dough proved too sticky and delicate for mechanic handling. Wheat flour was gradually added to stabilise the wrappers and improve production efficiency. Unfortunately, this meant that many modern Har Gow are no longer gluten free.

We are fortunate to have discovered flour, allowing us to return to the lightness and texture that make our gluten-free dumpling so special. Our wrappers are soft yet durable, never overly sticky, delicate enough to satisfy traditional expectations while remaining strong enough not to break apart. Whether boiled, steamed, or pan-fried, they are made to perform beautifully in every style of cooking.

In hospitality, we’re lucky enough to witness beautiful moments on Mother’s Day — the hugs, the laughter, the gatherings, and the love shared around a table. It always brings a smile to our faces.

But we also know that for some, today can feel incredibly difficult.

While we celebrate the joy this day brings to many, we would also like to acknowledge the mothers and families for whom Mother’s Day may carry grief, loss, longing, or struggle.

To those navigating a hard day today, we are sending you extra strength, love, and gentle thoughts.

May today bring you peace. šŸ§”šŸ’

With lots of love,
Stephanie

We often hear—or even say to othersā€”ā€œlegend, mate!ā€ But there are only a handful of moments in life when you get to say it and mean it. And when you do… you realise how lucky you are.

Since our house flooded and our washing machine went completely under, we’ve been relying on Laundromat. Honestly, it’s been a small blessing in a chaotic time, new machines, always clean, tidy, and so spacious.

Early Sunday morning, we received an email from the owner letting us know he had put our tea towels into the dryer for a complimentary cycle. Such a simple gesture, but genuinely kind, they just wanted to support and help small local businesses.

True legend. Lucky to have you in the community - Mark and Cathy! 🧔
