Is it time to give fast fashion the flick?

Sustainability expert Dr Kirsty Máté thinks so.

Join Kirsty for our next Hannibal Lecture as she reveals some uncomfortable truths behind our addiction to cheap, low-quality clothes – and explains what all of us can do to fix the problem.

Kirsty has been a sustainable design educator, consultant, designer and artist for over 30 years.

She is also the founder and owner of The ReDress Hub in Launceston, a social enterprise whose purpose is to keep clothing in use for longer by swapping, hiring and selling handmade slow fashion or preloved clothing, as well as teaching the skills needed to keep clothes in use for longer.

Convict dissent emerged in Australia in the mid-1820s and peaked in 1833-34, marking the demise of the regime but also a pattern of struggles over working hours and conditions that was inherited by the union movement.

The Notmans gang – who built the road to Perth in northern Tasmania – were the most resistant convict workers of all.

For our next talk, historians Hamish Maxwell-Stewart and Michael Quinlan will take a look at how collective action by convict workers like the Notmans gang reshaped both Tasmania and Australia into a fundamentally fairer and more equal society.

Maxwell-Stewart, a professor of heritage and digital history at the University of New England, and Quinlan, emeritus professor of industrial relations at the University of New South Wales, are the authors of Unfree Workers: Insubordination and Resistance in Convict Australia, 1788-1860.
