Another dining table in the books.

I have a sneak peak of this one a little while back and was able to deliver this to a very happy customer in Taigum.

When a customer throws around words like”family heirloom”, you know you’ve made something to be proud of.

That top is made out of 2 joined brush box slabs and the legs are made with spotted gum - utilising threaded inserts and bolts to make the table top and legs detach and easier to transport.

I look forward to the challenge of more builds like this in the future.

‘Froggy’ the site foreman at the Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre oversaw the log collection today. Despite not saying anything and remaining very still, I can tell he was impressed by our effort.

The Silky Oak logs I collected today will become bench seats for the students who attend the centre in the near future.

Out with the old and in with the new!

I was tasked with reinvigorating this beautiful piece of timber. I was given no instructions about how to finish the slab whatsoever, except “I trust your judgement”. On top of this, this was longest slab i have ever worked with - clocking in at 5.13m. I was adequately nervous about this as I had never been given free range with somebody’s elses timber before.

Needless to say, both myself and the customer are very happy with how it’s turned out. I went with clear resin theough the splitting and borer holes, with a matt polyurethane finish 🤌🏼

One small step for man - one giant leap for Evolve Woodworks!

Most people think that some rocket doing something somewhere is the biggest news of the week. When in actual fact, the biggest news is that I’ve finally bit the bullet and started working with resin.

My schtick has been to keep the main thing the main thing and let the natural elements of the timber do the talking, but when a customer approached me about wanting resin filled and sealed laundry bench tops, I felt ready to give it a crack.

Despite having little to know idea of what I was doing and no experience with resin, I have learnt a lot. However, working with resin now opens up a whole new side of woodworking for me and can make timber that may not be as usable for most projects not only usable, but desirable.

I’m pretty chuffed with how they’ve turned out.

Last week I finished off my work at the Scenic Rim Farm Shop & Cafe, where I got to work milling Jacaranda logs from a very sentimental tree that fell during a storm a while back.

They got in contact with me as they wanted to repurpose the timber from the tree that was not only special to the farm, but the local community as well - as many expressed their sympathy for the fallen icon of the farm.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, so that was my intention to help them in a tough time. It was an absolute pleasure to work for the farm and can’t wait to see what it all becomes once seasoned - I may even be helping them with a table when the time comes 🤞🏼

🚨 NOSTALGIA ALERT 🚨

Late last year I saw an ad on Facebook marketplace for a free desk - I instantly fell in love with it. Turns out the desk was salvaged by its current owner from the dump in the 80’s. She said there were hundreds of them there 😭

She didn’t have the time to do anything with it and just wanted it to go to a good home and restore it back to its former glory; that’s where I came in.

I picked up the desk and started sanding to try and remove the built up dirt and ink stains, however it was truly in immaculate condition - all original bolts, nuts screws and hinges. I thought that it may have been from the 70’s or maybe the 60’s, but when sanding underneath the desk, I was absolutely stunned to see that it still had its original “12/51” sticker still on it. This desk is 75 years old!

I have completed its restoration and it’s now in its final resting place as our family homeschooling desk in the play room. I am so happy that I was in the right place at the right time (procrastinating on Facebook marketplace) and happened to stumble across this amazing piece of Australian history.

If anyone knows where I can find some ink pots to go in the ink wells, I would be very grateful 😊

“Could not be more thrilled with our tables made by Joel at Evolve Woodworks in Chuwar!

We lugged this huge (and heavy) slab of 150yo English Oak - cut from a tree on our families property - from Tasmania when we moved here 3 years ago. It sat against the wall in our shed ever since.

Joel made our wedding arbour 2 years ago, and has now created two more stunning pieces of art that we are so proud to have in our home”

This impressive English Oak slab came from a tree that was at least 150 years old. It is being given a second chance as 2 separate additions to a clients home. Any guesses as to what they will be transformed into?
