Hello Hobart.
It is with a heavy heart and mixed emotions that I'm writing this message for all my patrons and followers on Social Media.
Last year, I returned home to Hobart after 23 years in Toronto. I was owner and operator of a local LGBTQI+ Video Bar for 6 years.
Unfortunately, the bar had to close with the lease being terminated due to apartments being constructed. A very common issue in Toronto.
Being closer to my wonderful family and reconnecting with the Q***r community here has been great too. I find Hobart folks to be super friendly!
After looking around for over a year, I found the current space and feel in love with it. AlphaBar opened in August and numbers were promising
considering it was the middle of Winter. As the months went on, numbers were up and down but often down. I have listened to all my patrons
suggestions, i.e an extended liquor license to serve past midnight, changing Bar Staff, introducing live DJ music, creating a safe smoking space,
continuous new music videos being added weekly and reducing drink prices to some of the lowest in Hobart without compromising quality.
Even changing the name from AlphaBar to 53 Underground to emphasise an all welcoming, inclusive bar. I also created a safe fun night
for Q***r Women & friends, "Violet Underground".
Other events will be advertised this week!
Unfortunately, I am still struggling to make my lease payments. December may be my final do or die month! At this point, I can not keep the bar open at a loss.
Plan B, I could help out with the family B&B and get a part time job, however I really want Hobart to have two fun Q***r spaces to call their very own.
My hope is the Community can get behind 53 Underground. Support YOUR local bar. It was never meant to be competition with other night clubs.
It is a space to chill-out with friends and make new ones. The lower music volume and a very friendly, inclusive atmosphere made for a true bar experience.
Meet your buddies here before heading out to dance...or stay!
Being part of the community, support goes both ways. So far, I've started donating $2 from every cocktail sold to 10 Lives Cat Centre and Taschard on special nights.
"If you build it, they will come". Now we just need Hobart's LGBTQI+ and friendly straight folks to come down and support YOUR new Bar.
Any suggestions, please email or chat with me.
Thanks so much for reading this.
