Here’s the details for this weeks line up:

Ardbeg Corryvreckan | 57.1%
Islay single malt matured in ex-bourbon and French oak. Big, oily and coastal with tar, brine, black pepper, dark chocolate, espresso and plenty of smoke.

Ballechin 10 | 46% | 50+ PPM
Edradour’s heavily peated Highland malt. Predominantly ex-bourbon with Oloroso sherry influence. Earthy and herbal with burnt heather, chocolate, spice and proper bonfire smoke.

Octomore 16.3 | 61.6% | 189.5 PPM
The lunatic of the bunch. Islay-grown barley matured across bourbon, Sauternes and Pedro Ximénez casks. Honeyed malt, fresh bread, citrus, orchard fruit, vanilla, earth and smoke.

The best part is that 189.5 PPM doesn’t simply mean it tastes four times smokier than the Ballechin. PPM tells you about the phenols in the malt, not how smoky the finished wh**ky will actually taste.

Apologies for the hayfever nasal-ness.

Australian Wh**ky is at its best when it isn’t trying to be a single malt Scotch.

The three whiskies / Wh***ey that proves this fact are:

The Gospel Straight Rye | 45%
100% Australian rye from the Murray Mallee. Caramel, vanilla, clove, pepper, green apple and rye spice. Around $90 to $100.

Starward Co-Ferment 2019 | 46%
Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and malted barley co-fermented before distillation. Red berries, plum, baking spice and malt. The original 2019 release is now hard to find, but Starward’s Co-Ferment project lives on.

Kinglake In The Blood Red Gum Finish | 46%
Victorian single malt finished with Australian red gum. Raspberry, dark chocolate, pink grapefruit, clove and black cherry. Around $130 to $135.

TOP 3 WHISKIES UNDER $100 🥃

1. Buffalo Trace Bourbon
40% ABV | Around $67
Caramel, vanilla, brown sugar and gentle oak spice. Approachable enough to drink neat, over ice or with Coke. The Goldilocks of bourbon.
2. Starward Two-Fold
40% ABV | Around $78
An Australian wheat and malt wh**ky matured in red w**e barrels. Red fruit, vanilla, tropical fruit and soft spice. Easily one of the best-value Australian whiskies available.
3. Laphroaig Select
40% ABV | Around $94
I managed to find this one on sale for $75! Peat smoke, sea salt, vanilla, sweet oak and that unmistakable medicinal Islay character. A softer introduction to the peat train, but still unmistakably Laphroaig.
