Last Saturday saw the club's inaugural "Saturday Singalong". And being completely unbiased, I can report it was a great success.

The 20+ singers were ably guided by gifted vocalist, Kriss Allen, accompanied by Harold and Ian on guitar.

Among the tunes tackled were old favourites such as:

Mad World
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Feeling Groovy
I'm a Believer
Killing me Softly
The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Singing is a great way to get that feel-good experience. And to meet like-minded people in a friendly atmosphere.

Potential attendees can dispell any notion that one should be a good singer to participate. The afternoon is a stress-free and fun group experience designed for all levels of singer.

The quality on display at last night's Open Mic was remarkable. But I won't list those great performers for fear of omitting someone.

Oh OK, I'll mention one: Ruby James. Ruby sang (with guitar) three tunes off her soon-to-be-released inaugural album. Not only were the songs great, but Ruby's singing was extraordinarily good. Ruby will be launching her album at the club on Saturday 26 September, which should be a great night.

There were a couple of first-timers. Robert sang (with guitar) original blues tunes. Wendy played alto-sax in a great duet with Gabrielle on keyboard. As is custom for first-timers, both Robert and Wendy received standing ovations.

The pan-drum players, Nick and Alaine, made a very welcome return with their melodic playing.

Other performers on the night were: Ian; Ron; Marcus; Gabrielle (solo); and Jock.

Thanks go to MC, Jock, and to sound-tech, Callum, who both did their normal great work.

Open Mic is held at the club on the second Friday of each month, commencing 7.30pm. All welcome!

Another interesting and varied night at last night's Open Mic. Naturally, there were the singer/guitarists, and a fair contingent of poets, but rather unusually there were two (count em) players of the handpan.

Yes, you heard right, the handpan. Don't know about you, but it's the first time I've seen, and heard, the handpan. Google describes the handpan as a convex steel percussion instrument shaped like a flying saucer. Played with bare hands, they produce rich, ambient and melodic soundscapes. Last night they were played by Nick and Alaine.

Other performers on the night were: Sarah, Ian, Kriss, Gabrielle, Marcus, Jen, Penelope, Jock, and Andrew.
