Last week I was lucky enough to taste the new range of four super premium single vineyard Pinot Noirs from Provenance Wines. This is the inaugural release of these wines and at $120 each, winemaker Sam Vogel is really sticking his head above the parapet. However, he needn’t worry, these wines are extremely worthy of this luxury price point! It’s so pleasing to see wines of this calibre join the ranks of our other super premium local Pinot Noir producers such as By Farr, and Bannockburn Vineyards. The featured Geelong vineyard in the range is the historic ‘Darriwill’ property in the Moorabool Valley with its links back to our early wine pioneering days in the 1850’s (as shown here in the background, the fabulous painting by celebrated watercolour artist of the 19th Century - William Tibbits). It’s a special site indeed and the fruit from this vineyard shows seamless power, grace, elegance and detailed complexity…the resulting wine being a superb reflection of all these characteristics and more still. I opened a bottle the other night (just to be sure 😉) and after a little time in the decanter prior to serving, it really opened up and fleshed out, confirming in my opinion its relevance to elite Geelong Pinot Noir sites.
Only 25 dozen of the 2023 wines are produced from the four vineyard sites (the others being the Sinclair from Ballarat, the Scotsburn from Scotsburn near Mt Buninyong, and the Doeven from Drumborg, Henty). I expect once word gets out they’ll easily sellout, luckily we have some of the Darriwill already in stock if you’re keen to lash out on a bottle!
