100 YEARS OF A SHED 🍻 Meet Bob Johnson aka Happy Bob!

Born in Fremantle in 1927, Bob has lived quite the life. From working here at A Shed in 1945 to mining in Kalgoorlie, working on sheep stations up north and travelling across WA, he’s certainly got a few stories to tell.

A self-confessed wanderer, Bob has always been curious about what lies around the next corner. Now 93, he’s swapped some of those travels for writing, sharing memories and keeping in touch with old friends through letters.

We’re pretty lucky to have people like Bob sharing their stories and giving us a glimpse into Fremantle’s past.

Here’s to 100 years of A Shed and the people who’ve been part of it. 🍻

100 YEARS OF A SHED 🚢 Meet Michael Metcalfe

Michael started his working life on the Fremantle waterfront at just 19, going on to spend 30 years as a customs officer travelling along the WA coast.

Along the way, he met his wife Robyn at Customs House, witnessed the changing face of the port and collected stories spanning everything from life aboard ships to the people he met along the way.

His story even comes full circle, with his nephew Tony later part of redevelopment project that brought Gage Roads to A Shed!

A century of history is made up of stories like Michael’s. Thanks for sharing yours with us 🫶

100 YEARS OF A SHED 🫶

Meet siblings Justin & Shana McKirdy, whose parents ran A Shed throughout the 1990s, back when it was home to a café, a gallery and a whole lot of activity on the waterfront.

From the launch of the Fremantle Dockers to fashion shows and the iconic Whitbread Race, they’ve got plenty of memories from the days when A Shed was known as The Docks.

They also shared a treasure trove of old photos and memorabilia, giving us a glimpse into what life at A Shed looked like back then.

And there’s a little connection to Gage Roads today, too. (Another) Justin, who started out as an apprentice chef at A Shed Café, now runs The Hen in the Swan Valley, where you’ll find Gage pouring on tap.

A century of A Shed means a century of stories, and we’re pretty lucky to have people like Justin and Shana sharing theirs with us. 🍻
