Chamomile contains compounds that influence inflammatory pathways.
Research suggests that it helps reduce prostaglandin production (period poops anyone?), which is one of the major drivers of period pain and cramping.

A systematic review of clinical trials found that chamomile was effective for period pain, and performed similarly to NSAIDs.

I have had great success in helping women experience pain-free periods *yes, it's possible! And to stop reaching for pain relief medication or tranexamic acid to reduce heavy bleeding.

I do a happy dance every time a client sends me an email about how much relief they have had around their menstrual cycle. 💃

It's hard to say this without sounding like a tosser...

But listening to clients' experiences makes me feel like some healthcare providers aren't even trying.

I've had countless people say to me, "Oh wow , no-one have ever asked me that before!"...

Which leaves me wondering : Well, what on earth ARE they asking you?

I get it. Spending 15-20min with someone, unless you know them very well, makes it extremely challenging to get all the information you need to address complex health conditions.

But I really do believe that more questions need to be asked., even if we don't always have the answers, it leads us down a road of enquirey that might reveal itself in time, even in our own private reflections.

I'd love to hear your experiences or your thoughts.

Obstacles to Cure

Some musings...
And more homeopathic philosophy.

What would you add?

Especially from a modern point of view. But these are still 100% relevant! Despite being formulated 100s if years ago.

Hahnemann would be shocked at the lives we live today 🙃

One of the most common questions I get as a naturopath and homeopath is

"What can I take for x, y, z condition"

My answer is always the same....

"It depends"

I need to ask you a hundred questions before I am confident in recommending a remedy

I understand this gets frustrating for people. But hear me out...

2 people walk into clinic with a cough *for example.

It might be the same virus. They both might have a cough, but their EXPERIENCE of the cough is completely different

One person might say "it hurts to cough, I have to my chest" "I want sips of cold water" "its worse for cold air" "it feels like a splinter inside my throat"

The other might say "it's better for warm drinks" "when I cough of feels like tiny hammers in my head' , "my lungs feel like they're burning", "the cough is dry but I know I've got mucous stuck that won't shift".

In my work, they will be given completely different remedies.

Same diagnosis . Not a one-size-fits-all approach.

This is why isn't never really a straight answer 🤪

Minerals are foundational.
There is no way around it.

Without them, you cannot produce hormones (oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones, insulin etc), build tissues, conduct cellular signaling, get minerals into cells, detox and produce neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, GABA etc)

Herbs are also foundational in my own practice, but we have to get the mineral balance right first, in order for herbs to take ultimate effect.

For example, yes we can give herbs for PMS, headaches, migraines, heavy periods, irregular cycles, irritability, poor mood, immune dysregulation, including bacterial vaginosis, candida etc, but if we have excess or inadequate minerals, we can only get so far, for so long.

People who work with me to assess their mineral status find that they can quieten the noise, find out what is really going on, learn simple ways to correct imbalances, and create long term resolution of symptoms.

I've learned this one the hard way.

I can't help but think, how different my life would be, especially my teens and 20s, if I had known why I know now...

This in itself is one of the driving forces of my passionate work now. Maybe my hope is that someone else doesn't have to learn the hard way...

If only I had balanced my zinc and copper , my hormone story would have been a very different one. As would my mental health story.

Minerals, like everything on Earth, exist in relationship and balance. Too much can also be dysfunctional.

Zinc is essential for serotonin production, gut health, neuroplasticity, tissue healing, immune health, copper balance, and hormone production. (hello mental health on all fronts).

Low zinc may result in depression, flat mood, low motivation, anxiety, poor appetite or digestion, hormone imbalance, frequent infections, poor immune tolerance etc.

When copper is relatively high or zinc is low, you may see :
Anxiety, tension, racing thoughts, oetrogen excess, headaches/ migraines, emotional sensitivity/ reactivity (I see this alot in teens and kids), PMS etc.
Copper can drive excess stimulation.

Things like chronic infections (viral, bacterial or fungal) and medications such as the pill, can disrupt this balance. (And the copper IUD as you would imagine).

Sodium is having its limelight at the moment (hello salty electrolytes and celtic salt)
And rightly so!

Sodium is essential for healthy adrenal function, cellular signaling, hydration, nervous system signaling, and blood pressure regulation.

Low Sodium may show up as:

Fatigue
Brain fog
Burnout
Dizziness
POTS
Craving salt ie chippies!
Feeling depleted , flat, dehydrated and blah.

Ratios of these minerals are also essential.
You can have too much of a good thing!!

I look at bloodwork and HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) to get insight into adrenal & nervous system function.

The best part, it really doesn't have to be complicated!

Reach out if this feels like you.

"Just eat more fibre"...

Yes... I've said this before. Many times. And often its brilliant advice.

However!
IF you have started amping up the fibre and feel like your gut health is getting worse , rather than better , you're not alone!

Anyone with fructose or FODMAP sensitivities will attest to that. (I'd advise you to look into SIBO if this is the case)

For some people, their microbiome cannot tolerate large amounts of fibre (yet!) , or certain fibres (ie some are fine and some are problematic) due to many reasons...

Most of the time, it's an overgrowth of certain species of bacteria , and when you start feeding them MORE , they can have a bit of a party and release inflammatory metabolites. No good...

It can also mean that you don't (yet) have the right beneficial species to be able to metabolise particular prebiotics.

There are many, many cases of microbiome analysis that I have worked with that explain why some prebiotics are definitely not suitable, at this stage of their treatment plan.

Prebiotics are excellent and one of the best ways to improve your microbiome, BUT, if it's the wrong one for you at the moment, it could cause more harm than good.

*the same goes for vaginal microbiome dysbiosis.

This is why I love to do microbiome testing... we get clear, clinically proven steps that will get you feeling better, not worse!

I touch on this in my Microbiome Foundations Masterclass (link in bio) , and if you're interested in looking at your microbiome , hit me up! It's my jam! 🍎
