FIRST DIRECT WIRELESS MESSAGE
UNITED KINGDOM TO AUSTRALIA

CENTENARY Saturday 22nd September 2018

On Sunday 22nd September 1918 Australian Prime Minister William “Billy” Morris Hughes prepared a message for Senatore Marconi to send in morse code from the Marconi transmitter in Wales to Australia by wireless.

Ernest Fisk had an experimental wireless station at his residence in Wahroonga, Sydney primarily operated by AWA technicians where the message was received at 1.15pm. Ernest Fisk was the Managing Director of Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Limited (A.W.A.).

The message read as follows:
"I have just returned from a visit to the battlefields where the glorious valour and dash of the Australian troops saved Amiens and forced back the legions of the enemy, filled with greater admiration than ever for these glorious men and more convinced than ever that it is the duty of their fellow-citizens to keep these magnificent battalions up to their full strength. W.M. Hughes, Prime Minister."

Technician Raymond E. McIntosh was the one who actually took down the message and transcribed the morse code into English in a log book and the official message form was written out later and signed by Ernest Fisk. The log book is now in the Mitchell Library.

In just 100 years wireless communication has totally transformed our world.
A centenary celebration and re-enactment is being held in Wahroonga today.
