Soumi Tannous, co-owner of Canberraās beloved Bar Beirut, has had a very big week, and a national award win turnedā¦

Bar Beirut owner Soumi Tannous has officially been crowned Australiaās Best Front of House personality by the Australian Hotels Association at their national award ceremony on the Gold Coast this week.

This week, Soumi became an Australian citizen. That same week, he was named Australiaās best host at the National AHA Awards. For the second time.
But this story starts eleven years ago.
Soumi arrives in Australia with what fits in a suitcase and an openness to whatever comes next. Three days in, his future father-in-law asks if he wants to go for a ārunā to pick up a car. Soumi thinks: sure, around the corner.
The run is to Adelaide. 816 kilometres. Thatās driving the entire Lebanese coastline four times. Then heās sent back solo, dodging kangaroos, camels, and goannas.
Welcome to Australia, mate š¦
He lands in Leeton, pulling beers and calling bingo at the Soldiers Club. And hereās where something clicks. Rural Australians are generous with their time and ridiculously welcoming. For someone who grew up with legendary Lebanese hospitality, it feels like home immediately. Different landscape, same heart.
Then Canberra. Small and compact, just like Lebanon. The right place to raise a family with his wife Chantelle. The right place to create something that captures the real Beirut ā the one she fell so hard for on a backpacking trip that her two-week holiday turned into a twelve-month stay.
So he builds Bar Beirut. Good food. Music that makes it impossible to sit still. The kind of hospitality that makes strangers feel like family.
Now, eleven years after that 816-kilometre ārun,ā Soumi is officially Australian. And officially Australiaās best host.
Last night the AHA Awards recognised Bar Beirut for Best Bar Experience, Cocktail List, and Marketing. Soumi took Executive of the Year. Bihanās front of house work got noticed.
Thanks to the AHA judges for seeing what we see in our team. Thanks to the guests who make this work worthwhile.

Welcome to the real Beirut: an underground movement for unity, tolerance, and peace.
Leave behind everything you think you know about Beirut.
The real Beirutis an epicentre of nightlife in a region swirling with war, hate, and hostility - instead, serving up beats, love, and cocktails. In its all-hours bars and clubs, religion, race, or the hand you hold are irrelevant.
The real Beirut is continually reinvented by its generations of clubbers who revel together in its music, dance, and hospitality par excellence. Where every day of the week is equal in the eyes of the Beirut dawn. Where the wounds and threat of war may be present, but where the past does not define the future.
The real Beirut was reborn in a bunker. Ours is an homage to these origins.
Ahla w sahla [welcome] to Lebanon. To the real Beirut. To the Beirut Bunker Bar.
