Today we wanted to take a moment to introduce or reintroduce some of you to one of our amazing staff - Keiko. And wish her a happy birthday for today!

Keiko is nothing short of a superwoman and has been with us since day 1. Keiko has been our on call saviour so many times when other staff coudln’t make it and would slot into any position with ease. She’s a great muse for Chef Rina and the two of them are a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen.

But Keiko’s biggest contribution to Muku is that every week she hand folded and handmade our pan-fried gyoza and Grandma’s mochi cheese potato.

We took a look at the numbers yesterday and since Muku started Keiko has made over 40,000 pieces of gyoza and mochi. It’s mind boggling!

Keiko has also been running her own beauty business for over 9 years - .co and if you’re looking for a bit of razzle dazzle, get in touch with her!

A big part of Muku and Chef Rina’s food philosophy is about seasonality and showing that transience through food. 🍂

And we’re sad to announce that our season at Scullin has come to a close. Our last day of trade will be this Sunday the 22nd of March 2026. Meaning you have exactly 5 days left to come and get your fill of ramen and cafe goodness! 🍜

Muku has been a success. Despite being a niche business out in the suburbs, we’re very lucky to have cultivated a great community who have supported us over the years. We’ve been busy pretty much every night since we opened in October 2023 off the back of a series of sold out pop-up events. We catered weddings and special events, held monthly events including Japanese breakfast events, language and culture exchanges and high teas. All of these were met with such a great response that we were able to run a weekly pop-up cafe every Sunday. And that’s been successful too with so many people showing up to try Chef Rina’s ever evolving menu. In tough economic times with so many businesses closing due to financial issues, we’re lucky to be able to close on our terms. 🙏🏻🙇🏻‍♀️

And, we did it the hard way. We made as much as we could from scratch - being one of the only restaurants in Canberra to make our noodles, broths and almost everything else by hand. We paid our staff fair wages, hired a young cohort of workers for whom Muku was their first job, hired staff from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds and helped support them to build confidence and develop hospitality skills. We composted all of our food waste and reduced our footprint wherever we could. All of this is not the norm in the industry, but we turned it into one of our strengths. 💪🏻

Thank you for everyone’s patience while we took a break - it was encouraging to receive so many enquiries about when we were opening again and to hear how much you missed us! 🥹

We’re glad to let you all know that Muku will be open for dinner service next Friday the 30th of January and Saturday the 1st of February. 🍜

will be reopening on Sunday the 2nd of February. ☕️

That’s a wrap on 2025 for this little suburban restaurant. 🎊

It was a massive year with so many great memories and we’re so grateful to the amazing community that keep us so busy! 🙇🏻‍♀️

We really appreciate everyone who has dined with us this year and for moments of comfort at Muku. It’s so fulfilling to provide hospitality and delicious food to everyone each week and the support we’ve received when we try new things has been so encouraging! 🙏🏻

We’ll be taking a break to recharge throughout January and wish you all a safe and happy holidays! 🏝️

On Tuesday we had the privilege of hosting for their end of year party including Ambassador Suzuki from the . 🎌

For a small neighbourhood restaurant focused on building community through food - it felt like an arrival. A mission complete kind of moment. We’d run several Japanese culture and language exchange events which led to us collaborating with AJS and now here we are at the end of 2025. 💕

We’d like to thank Dianne and her team from AJS for their support this year and for all they do in fostering connection between Australia and Japan and building community in Canberra. Take a look at all the amazing work they do! 💪🏻

We’d also like to thank Ambassador Suzuki for making the time to come out to Scullin and share a meal with everyone. 🍻

Chef Rina also reluctantly came out of the kitchen to address the room and talk about Muku and how happy she is to share her food with everyone which was a rare treat for our guests! ☺️

Thank you to everyone who has come to Haru over the past 3 weeks. 🙇🏻‍♀️

We’ve had so much fun running a pop-up cafe that we’re going to give it a crack every Sunday for the rest of the year. 🫠

So soft launch has become hard launch and we’d love your support as we round out a big 2025. 👩🏻‍🍳

Please join us every Sunday from 9:30am to 2pm for our Japanese style cafe menu with smooth coffee and premium matcha. 🍵☕️
