Every member of our co-op has a big personality, including this distinguished gentleman. So why did we come together? Inspired by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to promote our wine, and our amazing region, as a collective to make buying our wine easier than ever before.

We work independently, but when it comes to growing and making our wines, we share a passion for our region, and our very special cool climate wines, and for sharing that passion with other wine lovers.

Although there are a range of soil types across different vineyards - sandstone-derived clay loams, through to alluvial silts and gravels - broadly speaking all the soils in the Otways are well-drained and of low fertility, and perfect for growing high-quality grapes. They produce elegant and balanced wines with great natural acidity, tension, and energy.

We know that people love to buy local, but sometimes perceive a barrier to doing so – whether it be price, convenience or logistics. The Otway Wine Co-operative exists to eliminate that difficulty. Our customers can mix and match any combination of wines from all of our producers, checkout is secure and simple, and delivery is fast and efficient. During the disruptions and upheavals of 2020, we came together as a group and asked the question ‘how can we work together?’

During that time, most bulk and large volume players who sold through supermarkets and large online retailers were selling more wine than ever before, whilst small producers’, reliant on tourism and restaurant trade, were faced with a much different scenario.

Thankfully, the industry has now largely recovered. However, once the seed was planted, the idea of a co-operative seemed to endure. We are a small and relatively unknown region – but a fantastic one; well suited to making world-class wines, a new frontier that is part of the future of cool-climate winemaking in Australia.
